Understanding sex offenders: the untold story

I’ve made people’s stories my life’s work. I’m a person who talks to people sitting next to me on airplanes. I engage people at grocery stores, and even while sitting in those flimsy robes in the hospital, waiting for a mammogram. I generally like people. And I constantly “interview” them, even when I’m not working. I consider myself open-minded. I’d rather ask questions than answer. I try not to judge.

But one fall day last year, a random call to the newsroom caught me off guard: A co-worker shouted across the newsroom that a sex offender wanted to talk to me. Everyone looked at me. Well, Fake Doctor Karl Hanson would disagree with the assertion that “95 percent will not commit another sex offense.” Because to Fake Doctor Karl Hanson’s Static-99R scam — he’d much rather impose numbers that claim that the higher the number, the greater the recidivism.

While the intent of this article is good, what pi**es me off about it is that the author, despite the fact that she seems to understand how flawed the registry is, continues to write as if the term “sex offender” “felon” and “child molester” are all synonyms. I guess we should credit her for at least understanding that “pedophile” doesn’t always equal “sex offender”.
I hope she will continue to educate herself and improve her writing in the future. Once a bad journalist not always a bad journalist.

I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Lisa Sample for my Solitary Nation podcast and she was very knowledgeable and offered great information. Overall, a good news report with a few minor flaws. I did like how the reporter titled the man featured in the story as a “Registered Citizen”, rather than a sex offender.

That person that made that statement “a sex offender wants to talk to you” was sure trying to scare and trip her out just to get her to refuse helping this registrant out.
