First, we need to get out of the way the accusations, based on the title of this post, that I don’t care about the victims. I care about the victims much, much more than those who persist in supporting a system that all but ignores the victims and apparently doesn’t care about any victims except those victimized by registered sex offenders.
Florida has just passed a plethora of laws, and is looking to pass more, under the guise of protecting children from those registered sex offenders. Full Opinion Piece
Let’s do some simple math here using these numbers since law makers don’t know simple math, or simple anything for that matter;
31,000 released over 14 yrs= 2,214 released/year
600 (hundreds!?) of the 31,000 = 2% re-offended
600 re-offences over 14 yrs = 43 average per year re-offences
43 average re-offences per year of the 2214 average released offenders = 1.9% re-offences.
The math bears out the low recidivism rates on average for this “dangerous” group of people. Just an FYI to throw into the mix; your son or daughter is more likely to be molested by a Florida cop than by a released sex offender.
Lest one may think I blow smoke out my hind parts regarding police misconduct (in Florida). My numbers come from a 2010 NPMSRP national Police Misconduct Report. The report states that Florida has a higher than average rate of police misconduct; average is 977/100K officers while Florida is 1081/100K officers. 9.3% of misconduct by police is sexual in nature, with half of those being against minors. If we take the averages of 9.3% times the 120,000 officers in Florida, we get 100.5 incidents of sexual misconduct in Florida with 51% against minors, or 51 and change sex offenses against minors by cops in Florida. Let me remind you, that these are only the reported offenses. So…by my math, 51 > 43 by almost 19% so the children in Florida are 19% more likely to be molested by a cop than by a violent and dangerous sex offender.
I’m thinking that Florida should pass a plethora of laws against violent and dangerous police officers, with enhancements and lifetime registration, mental/psych testing, residency restrictions, loss of housing and employment, hell, take their damn retirement and put it in a “victims fund”!
