IL: Explosive 3-hour meeting has many talking about possible health and housing center

[newschannel20.com – 8/21/19]

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — An explosive meeting took place Wednesday evening over whether Springfield should allow a vacant building to become a health and housing center.

While the proposed center is more than just a homeless shelter, some asked how will the place know if they have a sex offender coming to use their facilities, especially because of the proximity to the Lincoln Magnet School.

“There is no way to know that the mental health individuals that they’re serving are sex offenders. There’s no way to know unless something happens and I ask that you hear the pleas of our community,” said Angela Harris, a concerned citizen.

I swear, it is like listening to demon possessed people or zombies that have the inability to hear what they are saying. So do they believe that the nearly one million people on the registry are just crazed deviants that wantonly lunge out and attack any and all citizens whenever an opportunity arises? They have no problem with drug dealers, armed robbers, arsonists, and domestic violence offenders…actually no mention of murderers–but lord have mercy, the sex offender is beyond the right of human compassion. They have no right to fulfill basic needs. These people say these things and don’t ever do any self reflection and even investigate the true statistics. My case manager from prison told me that the inmates with sex offenses were the least likely to return, whereas the drug dealers were the most likely. That came from someone dealing with them every day. Why is that a secret?

Yeah….deny sex offenders public mental health access and shelter and basic human rights. Not the brightest bulb.

As long as you call them “sex offenders”, you are helping them do it.

Seriously, did any of these people study history in school. This is basically a modern twist of the Salem Witch trials ….how sad.

  4. ML

Ms. Harris is correct that there is no way to know whether any person on the sex offender registry makes use of any available mental health services. Nor is she entitled to know that information.

She, and every other “concerned citizen” should be happy that such services are available not just to registered citizens but to others who may need them.
