I called the Southeast Division and was informed that I am required to register in-person.
This @AJ is not the @AJ you all know, love, and/or despise. I have no idea what “the Southeast Division” even is.
Sorry I did not know that name was already taken, I figured I wouldn’t be able to post anything if it was already being used.
@AJP:
No worries. It can get a bit confusing at times with the ability to put whatever you want in as “Name.” It happens…sometimes maliciously.
I showed up in person and the LAPD office was closed. I was instructed to register by phone, however I called multiple times and it goes to voice-mail. I left 3 voice-mail already and haven’t heard back. I’ve been documenting the call logs but getting a little nervous about failure to register.
@AJP:
I’d turn on geotagging for my camera and take a selfie in front of the door. Even better if you could have someone take one of/for you with your holding a GPS-synced clock with time and date (maybe the other’s phone?). Document, document, document.
Very, very good advice from AJ…geotaged selfie in front of the door. I think you have a right to be nervous and even beyond the picture, which you should do regardless…keep calling…maybe even call LAPD central DT LA….do not sleep on this.
Good Luck and Keep trying
Best Wishes, James I
AJP ~ A failure to register is only when done willfully. You obviously tried to register, and under the circumstances, I doubt they would enforce anything. You posted here that you tried, so that should prove it if it ever became an issue.
UPDATE: I kept calling the front desk until I finally got someone to pick up, they told me to call the detective (different number from the sign posted outside) and he was able to get my information down. For anyone else that has to register at this location, make sure to call the front desk and ask about 290 registration. The number posted outside was very misleading, it rings a few times and then goes voicemail. They did not even know I had left 3 voicemails already, luckily I was finally able to get this over with for this year at least.
Thanks to everyone for all the help and advice.
@AJP I’d file a police report then I’d hire a lawyer and not only would I press charges I’d also file a lawsuit on Law Enforcement in my jurisdiction for not being compliant in 290 registration laws and undermining Public Safety. Now that’s guaranteed to make the Fox 11 news.
You can’t tell someone it’s mandatory in person registration for 20 30 something years in the name of Public Safety and then all of a sudden oh you can register by phone doesn’t affect Public Safety.
They literally made in person registration mandatory for years when they didn’t have to and anyone who’s ever had to register knows it’s shaming humiliating degrading you feel like you’re in custody demoralizing they tag you like a wild animal and released to back into the wild u dont feel human.
Now by them saying in person registration isn’t mandatory just goes to prove that the registry is just punishment.
Good luck
