Sign-Up Now for ACSOL Conference!

It is now possible to sign up for this year’s annual ACSOL virtual conference which will be held on Friday, September 17, and Saturday, September 18.  The conference will feature three distinguished keynote speakers as well as feature presentations by subject matter experts and panels on a variety of topics important to registrants and their families.

Keynote speakers include Jill Levenson, Ph.D., attorney Miriam Aukerman and law professor Ira Ellman.  Levenson has published dozens of articles that support registrants and their families, on topics including the ineffectiveness of registries and the myth that registrants pose a significant danger on Halloween.  During her presentation, Levenson will discuss “Post-Conviction Traumatic Stress; Recovery, Resilience and Restoring Hope.”  Aukerman is an ACLU attorney who successfully challenged Michigan sex offender laws that had been applied retroactively.  She will discuss the current status of changes in those laws, including failed attempts by the state legislature, to comply with recent court decisions.  Ellman is a recently retired law professor known for his article, “Frightening and High” which debunked the basis of several important U.S. Supreme Court decisions, including Smith v. Doe, which determined that the requirement to register does not constitute punishment.  Ellman will address his new article regarding the connection between animus and violations of equal protection laws.

“This year’s keynote speakers will provide registrants, their families and those who support them with important information and insight,” stated ACSOL Executive Director Janice Bellucci.

In addition to the keynote presentations, subject matter experts including criminal defense attorneys Richard Gladden of Texas and Chance Oberstein of California will discuss topics of great concern to registrants and their loved ones, including the federal government’s proposed SORNA regulations, the California Tiered Registry as well as domestic and international travel.  Panel presentations will include discussions of housing challenges and solutions, registrant success stories, family issues, the LGBTQ community and how to cope with conditions of parole, probation and supervised release.

The conference sign-up form is available using the link below.  The cost to sign up for the two-day conference is only $25, however, additional funds can be contribute in order to provide scholarships for those who cannot afford to pay.
