LA: Hire of convicted rapist causes business to close, Shreveport discusses violence

Source: shreveporttimes.com 5/16/22

The Shreveport City Council voted unanimously to uphold a license revocation against a local taxi cab service that admitted to hiring a convicted rapist.

The company, VIP Taxi Services LLC, spoke before the City Council on Monday in an attempt to appeal the Shreveport Police Department’s order that it suspend services immediately.

SPD revoked the company’s license after discovering VIP allowed registered sex offender Ontario Samuels to drive, despite his third-degree rape conviction.

I should not be surprised, and color me naïve and ignorant regardless (I am), but is there a statute in LA to then effect that such permits can’t be issued to registrants? Of course, even if there were I would think such laws unjust and constitutionally suspect, but it’s even worse if this is just the police department and city council setting the rules based on what they feel like.

Is the latter really that much better than dealing with the local mafia?

Stoping innocent murders is really hard and time consuming. Bomb threats, yea that makes the school system look bad. What can we do to make it look like we actually care about the citizens of this fine city and help us stay elected… I got it we will go after a taxi driver
~ city council meeting. Always after the low hanging fruit.

There’s nothing more detrimental getting in the way of a person’s reintegration back into society as law-abiding tax-paying citizen than your own local government – and federal too.

Sorry, but with all the Ride Sharing issues in the news regarding assaults and worse, this company was taking a unneeded risk by allowing this man to drive their cab. He does deserve the opportunity to redeem himself, but possibly in a less public profile type of job. The company didn’t do their due diligence and it unfortunately cost them.
