The Hollister Police Department will continue to register local sex offenders in person—with social distancing protocols in place—despite an executive order by Gov. Gavin Newsom allowing law enforcement to conduct such registration remotely.
“The Hollister Police Department is aware of the seriousness and the need to monitor convicted sex offenders in our community,” reads a May 18 press release from Hollister Police. “The department has a barrier in place at our front lobby that protects our staff. Our personnel are also trained to use masks, gloves and hand sanitizer when contacting the public or in the process of registering sex offenders, arson registrants or gang registrants. Therefore, despite the (governor’s) order, our department can and will continue to register sex offenders as before with no modification of our current process.”
Encouraged, allowed, trained…
Again, executive orders like this only are legal for the level of government from which they are issued. These departments are not directed to comply as HPD is showing despite the encouragement, being allowed, and trained to do so (and hopefully do use their training).
It would be interesting to know how many of the department have been tested (and retested continually) to ensure there is no possible transmission from any employee of HPD…
I live a city away from Hollister. Their jail is out in the boonies and is not close to any businesses, schools or human traffic. Maybe the location of the jail is one of the factors why they made this decision.
“Our community.”
“Our children.”
“Our streets.”
Wow, these LEOs really do have a savior complex!
