The new Discovery+ series “Undercover Underage” trails Roo Powell, who regularly poses as young girls—employing a variety of disguises—to catch child sexual predators online.
Filling the vacuum left by NBC’s popular To Catch a Predator (which last aired in 2007), Undercover Underage charts the efforts of intrepid activists to identify and gather evidence on child predators so that local law enforcement can bring them to justice. A six-part docuseries premiering on Discovery+ on Nov. 2, it’s far from a graceful non-fiction exposé. What it lacks in understatement, however, it makes up for with fascinating details about the way such monsters operate, and the canny techniques used to coax them out of the online shadows and into the light.
Safe from Online Sex Abuse (SOSA) is a non-profit organization dedicated to prevention and awareness about online child sex abuse and exploitation, and Undercover Underage follows its members as they attempt to stop would-be predators from carrying out their repugnant intentions. SOSA was founded by Roo Powell, a 38-year-old mother of three who spearheads the outfit’s activities by posing as 15-year-old girls in teen chat rooms in order to attract the attention of adult creeps. Powell assumes manufactured personas for this plan, wearing a wig, communicating from a staged bedroom, and using a variety of lighting and image touch-up tricks to sell her ruse. It’s a well-thought-out charade, and posing as “Flori”—an emotionally fragile high school student from Stamford, Connecticut, who lives with her single mother, a nurse—it pays immediate dividends, eliciting tons of messages that range from the disgusting to the disgraceful to the outright abominable.
Lock her up and throw away the key.
For her to go through all this trouble, make-up, etc I’m starting to think she gets into this role playing and gets off behind the scenes from her real fantasies. To put this much effort into this is ridiculous. The effort would be better spent educating parents and teens.
Some people are just in it for the glory of the TV lights – something like John Walsh. She already succeeded by getting her name in the news.
Blah,, blah blah
I think idiots like this ought to learn what a pedophile actually is before they go hunting for one.
There needs to be laws that punish minors for being on these adult sites. If the government wants to stop sexual assaults, they need to hold everyone accountable. Even the minor.
Undercover Karen on the Fear Mongering network!! Enough with these justice warriors. Minors shouldn’t be on social media and it’s the parents responsibility.
Considering the lengths she’s going to in order to entrap these people, I would be surprised if there are any prosecutions – I think they could be sued for the trauma and shame they cause their victims. Too bad they can’t actually create quality, original programming like they used to when we grew up.
So let us say that if she (Flori) is not in reality a minor however she chats inappropriately with a minor who says in the chat that they are 30 but in reality they are under 18 and a minor…will she (Flori) then be arrested?
Wow, straight up entrapment
