Living with 290: About to Discharge Parole. Now What?

After being convicted of a felony and 3 misdemeanors, I served 50% of 5 years (2.5 years) in prison and am now approaching the end of my 3 year parole. For all of the negatives that can come with Parole, there is at least one positive: someone tells you exactly what you must comply with.  You’re told where you can and cannot live, you’re told what you can and cannot do for Halloween, and you’re told where you can or cannot be. I’m excited to have most of my limitations…

Living with 290: What’s Next?

I started dating a guy 17 months ago. He recently told me he had a Federal PC290 conviction. Long story but he was in possession of 3 short videos on his PC (compliments of an adult step-child). He did 28 months. We both live in Orange County but different cities. Since he sometimes spends the night at my home his P.O. said he was required to go to the city I live in and register my address as a second address. He was told it was just a “paperwork” formality.…

Living with 290: Monster

I was convicted of a Lewd and Lascivious act upon a minor between the age of 14 and 15 with there being a 10 year difference between us. This occurred in Orange County in October of 1994, I served 3 years probation and had to go to counseling for the 3 years. When the victim turned 18 we started a long term relationship that lasted over 8 years.  I understand the law and do realize the ramifications of my actions. This happened over 20 years ago and I have been…

Living with 290: Mundane Purity

I titled this story “Mundane Purity” because I thought it was a catchy title and may grab someone’s attention. I met a woman when I was in the Marine Corps in 1998 and married her 3 months later. She had two children I raised as my own and we were blessed with a 3rd child that was born in January of 2000. I’m not going to bore you with the details of our marriage but I’ll try and make a long story short and get to the point. I hired…

Living with 290: Endless Sentence – But Hopeful.

I am new to the site, did not know it existed.  I am a 290 registrant, with no options for relief but a Governor’s Pardon. My case was non-violent.  I got my case in 1998, was my first experience with law enforcement.  Not knowing the consequences I plead no contest to my charge.  I acted stupidly and thought this was the “honorable” thing to do.  I ended up with doing almost 7 years in prison.  Wasn’t until I paroled that I found I would be a life time registrant. I…

Living with 290: Who started this behavior anyway?

I thought to post my story for the benefit of some personal clearing because who can you be totally honest with, and there is the essential part of this “problem” society has and will continue to have with this kind of acting out or sex crimes as it were. I grew up in a typical blue collar family, but my parents divorced when I was in grade school.  That is when this family friend decided to take the place of my father, spent much time with me, I happen to…

Living with 290: Pulling the Rug Out from Under Me (and my family) – UPDATED

I was just released three months ago. My father came to be with me for the first week, as he had moved out to Texas for his job some years ago. He, along with the rest of my family who live locally, wanted to help me settle in. The day after my release, I reported to the parole offices as required, where my father and I were hoping to discuss my housing options with my PO. We waited four hours after leaving a message to his office before finding out…

Living with 290: My dad is dying

He wants me to go back to Missouri to help him work on a few things that still interest him. He wants to die at home and he needs someone there because his wife is close behind and unable to care for him. He wants to die with dignity – at home, under his own terms. He is one of the last surviving WW II vets and most of his life after he worked in the defense industry with a high security clearance. He helped design the B1 Bomber and…

Living with 290: Lost my Job Today

I had another job lined up to start on the 22nd. I waited as long as I could to tender my resignation to my current employer, when my new employer called me after they ran my background check. I tried to keep my current job, but my employer said that they accepted my resignation in good order. Now I am unemployed. I’ll start looking tomorrow. With the draconian life-time felony, no wonder it’s so hard to get your live back. Considered suicide, but that would give .doj too much pleasure.…

Living with 290: Counseling or treatment

Most if not all individuals who are convicted of registerable sex offenses must participate in a counseling or treatment program as a condition of post conviction/supervised release terms. These programs are overall geared towards individuals who were convicted of hands on offenses. With an increase in prosecutions for non contact offenses including pornography cases it is curious that even in the past ten years few if any non contact programs have started. Additionally most conditions state that the offender will pay for part or all costs associated with the treatment…

Living with 290: Being a 290 Registrant convicted of a DUI in SLO county

I’ve been required to register in CA for an indecent exposure charge for the last 15 years of my life. Just as an FYI in SLO county they use that against you for a DUI arrest. I admit I had a drinking problem and should not have been behind the wheel. But all I have heard from the beginning of the trial is your a sex offender. I’ve since become sober and do not drink. Even have been denied sheriffs work program due to being registered in CA. I cannot…

Living with 290: Modification Hearings

In the 22 years I have been fighting my wrongful conviction, I have been faced with those who would say “let it go, get on with your life, you can’t win,” and there have been times when I had to wonder whether I was just becoming obsessed with the fight after so many hundreds of hours or research and typing and retyping and dwelling on the same thing over and over again only to be denied in the appellate courts. As a result of a failure to register conviction in…

Living with 290: Tied Down and Forced Intimcay: Therapy

My Letter to Sharper Future’s San Diego Office in regards to civil rights violations. Yesterday I walked to the back parking area, just as David and Youngster were converging from the parking lot near the smoking area. They greeted me, and we approached the smoking area where several other people were already sitting. Those bushes do not have enough room for the entire group, especially when other patrons of the complex are out there taking breaks. We were standing in spitting distance, and I sat down on the wall to…

Living with 290: Afraid to fight for his rights…Does he have them?

Greetings, I am a family member and supporter of my sibling who is a 290 registrant.  He has completed his 1 year anniversary this past January 2015 with flying colors.  He has been attending web community college to attain his AA degree and has been working several steady but manageable jobs. Recently, this past Sunday (March 15, 2015) while working at a ‘Park and Ride’ near the airport in San Diego, an employee from a competitive company who was apparently having a bad day began bad-mouthing my brother.  My brother…
