FL: Sheriff sued after threatening to arrest fugitives who sought hurricane shelter

A Florida sheriff who threatened to jail fugitives with warrants if they sought shelter during Hurricane Irma has been sued by a man who claims he was denied entry to a shelter.

The Orlando Sentinel reports the lawsuit filed Sunday by Nexus Services, an organization that provides legal help to immigrants, claims Andres Borreno was denied entry to a shelter in Polk County after sheriff’s deputies told him he would have to submit to a background check before entering a shelter. I don’t think this lawyer will bring up the idea that it is also illegal to kick out RC as well.
I hope but

When Irma was on her way I caught the story on FB about this Sherrif’s policy keeping RCs out of the shelters and was incensed. My anger reached a boiling point when reading the supportive comments. I’m happy someone is suing and hope he wins. Also happy to see most of the handful of comments on that article to be critical of the sherrif. Here’s mine:

I hope he wins. I can see arresting people with warrants, but to keep out RSOs while still letting in paroled wife beaters and murderers is ludicrous. This hysteria over sex offenders has gone too far. And for any jackass that wants to call me a child molester or sympathizer can kiss my azz. How many of you had sex with girls who, by today’s standards, would be considered too drunk to consent? How many of you sanctimonious cvntz mooned a school bus loaded with the other team, and how many of you played doctor with the little girl or boy of the same age? How many of you, as 18 year olds, had younger girlfriends? All of those things are registerable offenses. So get off your high horse and consider how rediculous this has become because any of us or our loved ones are at risk for being labled a sex offender. Sherrif Douche Bag here has only fueled the flames in this modern day witch hunt.

When I read what he tweeted, I responded to him asking him to grab his firearm, point it to his head and pull the trigger. But you know what, I hope Justice through litigation will do the job. He’s cares nothing about the constitution or the people. He picks and chooses who he protects and serves. Sadly, he’s a younger Sheriff and this move will probably have him re-elected time and time again, just like former Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Sadly he’ll probably have all of any legal costs paid for by the taxpayers and will never be held responsible for his actions. I’m more than angry just writing about it.

I’m glad that this sheriffs statements have received critical commentary, and the damage to his reputation as a public servant has been done but after reading the actual lawsuit, I hope this law firm loses. The complaint has nothing to do with banning registrants from hurricane shelters and everything to do with actually distancing their client from being in the same category thereof.

” Florida Law ensures that all motor vehicle/ ID cards of sex offenders contain clear markings. All that Sheriff Judd had to do is check each persons license/ ID card and deal accordingly with those persons designated a sexual offender/predator”

So they contend that the plaintiffs civil rights were violated because there was no probable cause to conduct a background check just from the mere act of seeking shelter from a life threatening storm, but ex sex offenders off paper, well, they can be treated differently.

Pfft.

This really couldn’t happen to a better guy. People pay their debt to society, required to possess drivers licenses showing their registration status, banned from living in certain areas and banned from certain jobs. Florida is truly a great state!

This is clearly out of line! You bring people to justice, punish them and the government continues to punish you and stack on more and more ordinances! This is nuts! First, we had to register! Then, we out people online for all to see? Then, we began posting signs, requiring special drivers licenses, banning people from living in certain areas and the list goes on and on. How do you expect anyone to be productive?
