CHICAGO (CBS) — Illinois loses grant money every year as a penalty for failing to meet federal standards with our Sex Offender Registry.
CBS 2’s Tara Molina found Illinois manages to get that money back – more than $2.5 million worth. But the state still is not in good standing.
This has been going on for more than 10 years. Illinois loses grant money every single year since the state isn’t in compliance with the federal Sex Offender Registry and Notification Act, or SORNA.
But we found every year the state is penalized and loses money, Illinois turns around and gets it back – claiming it needs every federal dollar to get into compliance.
But more than 10 years later, and with a total of $2,757,692 having been reallocated back into the state’s pocket altogether since 2012, Illinois still isn’t there yet.
Looks like some people are finally starting to get it. It’s about the money
Grants are based on need. IL has to justify their need for the amount requested. It is obvious they do just fine as is. You can’t really penalize a grant by shorting it funds but would not be surprised if IL inflates their amount requested to anticipate this shortfall and work with it.
Sure Illinois claws the Byrne Grant cash back, because if the States actually challenged the constitutional nature of the withholding by the Federal, the fed would lose AND they know it. So as long as LEO grant cash continues to flow into Illinois none will complain.

LOL! 🤣 Hilarious! 😆
Of course nothing changes ….. and why in the world would it?! As the saying goes, “Don’t fix what ain’t broke!”
Apparently, it’s easier to simply ask for more funding to fix the IL Registry than to actually do the work of fixing it!
(Sorry to be so cynical, but I work in government. This is SOP. 🙄 )
Registrants in Ill. pay $100 each year. X 33,000 plus registrants = 3.3 million
Raise the rate another $100 or two, fix the problem. Come on politicians, jump on this. Become governor on this platform.
