The Alliance for Constitutional Sex Offense Laws (ACSOL) has prepared and sent a letter to the federal Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), headed by Elon Musk, to eliminate all funding for the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). According to that letter, annual funding for SORNA exceeds $10 billion.
The letter states clearly that SORNA funding has punished and continues to punish U.S. citizens required to register. The letter identifies three agencies — Department of Justice, Department of State and the General Services Administration — as recipients of SORNA funding.
For example, SORNA requires individuals convicted of a sex offense involving a minor, including offenses that did not include violence or even physical touching, to have a “unique identifier” added to their passport. This identifier is now printed on page one of the passports of affected registrants and can result in the denial of entry into countries. In the history of the world only two countries — Nazi Germany and the USSR — have added similar markings to the passports of their citizens. For both countries, the passports of only their Jewish citizens had this marking.
The letter also addresses recently issued regulations which require registrants to take actions that are not possible in the state where they live. For example, the regulations require many registrants to register four times a year despite the fact that state law requires registration only once a year.
ACSOL will post any and all replies to this letter on this website.

Letter to DOGE - Signed - Feb 202502242025
OMG… Was hoping you’d do this! I wanted to but didn’t know how.
I think maybe you should have pointed to the fraud of “frightening and high” to show why it is a HUGE waste of money.
Our children’s safety and well-being should never have been sacrificed under this fraudulent money-grab guise of public safety.
If SORNA is an act of Congress how can DOGE defund it?
Also, I did hear them say that they were not going to take any money away from public safety but 10 billion a year for nothing is a HUGE waste fraud and abuse.
I believe the only thing that would have added a little more punch to this letter would be to add the stats from the research done proving the last thirty years the registry has been totally ineffective. That would give Elon another easy argument for cutting money.
What about mandatory minimum prison sentences? Say the mandatory minimum is 24 months more than the US Sentencing Guideline sentence: at $100 per day that’s $72,000. The timing couldn’t be better to avoid congressman trying to one up one another on nonviolent picture viewing crimes. Same with eliminating SORNA. Maybe no republican would argue against it if Elon Musk pursues it.
Thank you ACSOL I fully support your efforts and hope for some success
I think it might be better to write directly to Elon Musk. Sending to DOGE doesn’t guarantee Musk will see it. I feel like if he doesn’t then nobody else will forward it.
To those of you asking” why didn’t you include………” , you can’t pen a request and make it about every little thing that bugs you.
The letter’s short and to the point, as it should be. You start pointing out each issue and the person reading is going to get disinterested very quickly. How many of you have seen a long diatribe here and didn’t even bother finishing it. Besides the letter is directed towards budgeting, which DOGE is addressing. You really think any of those idiots even know what tier reduction is? Or care if someone can’t go visit a relative in another state? Come on!
Maybe folks don’t know that Elon Musk backed a bill by Nancy Mace to deport undocumented migrants convicted of sex crimes. And Elon came down hard on Dems who voted against that bill. Most people will agree that anyone who commits a crime should be deported, but the fact that Elon gets especially irked over those with sex offenses, sort of tells you he’ll leave SORNA in place. 🙁 But it’s always nice to dream 😏
