FL: Scammers target sex offenders in Steuben County with fake warrant claims

Source: newportdispatch.com 3/18/25

BATH — The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning about scammers impersonating law enforcement officials to extort money from registered sex offenders.

Sheriff Jim Allard reports that scammers are contacting registered sex offenders claiming to be members of the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office.

The fraudulent callers tell victims that arrest warrants have been issued due to missed DNA submissions.

The scammers then demand payment through “non-traditional means” to have the supposed warrants vacated.

Officials emphasize that the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office never solicits money from the public to vacate warrants.

Not to be insensitive, but how ignorant does one have to be to believe that law enforcement would call with such a bul***** story and then demand payment over a phone to clear a fictitious warrant.
I’m not mad at the scammers. They show ingenuity and drive. I’m seriously disappointed in the Registrant that actually believes this cr*p. Politicians do this every election cycle. Telling constituents how screwed up their lives are and then asking for money to fix the problem. How many of us have recieved an email from a PAC asking to participate in a survey, but you can’t submit it unless you donate at least $5. What’s the difference in what they are doing vs. these registrant phone scammers. I think the cops are pissed because these guys are better at being corrupt cops than they are!
Maybe we should elect the scammers…….oops, we already did! 🤣

Scammers target people forced to register.
So do the government and vigilantes. Why shouldn’t scammers get in on it too?

State-sanctioned trafficking, it’s all good…

They know we’re a soft target and easy to manipulate with fear.(especially the new one) This is why scammers continue to target those forced to register.

Cops won’t call to let you know you have a warrant, they will just come and get you. I know when I get a call from any unknown number that leaves a voicemail I panic. It happens when all of our info is made public Some price club Justice Roberts you need to wake up to the mess you help create.
