U.S. District Court Judge Richard Matsch recently ruled that Colorado’s sex-offender registry violates the due-process rights of three plaintiffs, thereby amounting to cruel and unusual punishment. Boulder attorney Alison Ruttenberg, who’s kept the case going for the past four years, lauded this decision because it acknowledged that treating every person on the registry like a violent child predator was patently unfair. All these positive articles and movement in the courts has my spirits up pretty high. I almost don’t care about the terrible California bill. I’m very happy to see that actual facts are finally getting out there and more and more people are starting to embrace them.
But it always upsets me to see politicians clearly place their carrier above actually doing what’s right. And its not just for the registry. They seem to just flow with the crowd and the popular opinion rather than actually upholding the constitution and following actual facts. This is particularly appalling when they do so when it would actually harm the very people that they’re serving, such as climate change and vaccines. It doesn’t matter how many boots you lick and how popular you are: ignoring actual facts will lead to more misery in the long run for everyone.
My family and friends are appalled the my name and crime are still being exploited by parents for Megan’s law post sentence. Middle School classmates of my children have printed “the flyer” and taunted them with it.
An aside…
Has anyone ever seen Coffman and Nancy Grace side-by-side? They could be each other’s evil twin!
Fun fact…Guess which one is Nancy Grace, and which one is Cynthia Coffman?
