The U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Office of Justice Programs (OJP) today announced more than $17 million in Fiscal Year 2014 grant assistance for states, territories, tribal governments and other entities to use to implement, enhance and maintain sex offender programming throughout the United States.
“These awards provide a wide range of assistance to help states, communities, tribes, and even institutions of higher learning manage sex offenders,” said Dawn Doran, Acting Director of the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering and Tracking (SMART). “They will give jurisdictions the tools they need to protect their citizens, intervene in cases involving deviant sexual behavior, and offer families, neighbors, and students valuable information and resources.” Full Article

So the vast majority of funds will be going to significantly jacking up punishment for registrants rather than the far more necessary need to PREVENT sex crimes in the first place. Sad, sad state of affairs indeed.
It is clear that nothing is going to get better with our pathetic situation and that things are only going to continue to get worse…especially as the need for a scapegoat grows as frustration from economic problems continue (starting to sound a LOT like Nazi Germany doesn’t it)!
I am afraid that baby steps are not enough…we need a full on assault if we want to survive this.
This is nothing to get upset about. $17 million divided by every local jurisdiction = about $5 dollars per agency. Things are moving fast and in the right direction. In two years California will have a tiered system and I would bet the illegal politician/union laws enacted will be challenged and lessened.
I’m living in South Lake Tahoe now and it was insane when I moved here last February; the whole city was off limits. Now I can live and go anywhere.

All of witch is a crock of …. none of the other laws have done anything to reduce the oocurence of offences so let through away more tax payer money and see if that works?????
Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering and Tracking. That reveals it all. No need to mention restoring the peace, due process, rehabilitation or reintegration. They should call themselves Waring Against Registered People Every Day, or WARPED.
C’mon we should know by now none of that money will be used by any agencies to deal with SOR issues. It’s going to pension payments and other BS that they can’t afford. This is PR at best. Nothing to worry about here.
Guys, seriously. They spend more than this on bombing ISIS in. 5 mins. How many states are there? How many counties exists in the US? How many Indian Reservations exist in the US? This is kind of a joke. Forget about it !
Oh I can’t for the day…..these stupid people are wasting time, money, and other resources on measures that don’t work very well. Know what I find amazing? Many of the cases cited in SORNA involved murder.
