I am going to suggest something that is counter-intuitive to our efforts to reform America’s sex offender laws, but I have a good reason for my proposal. I want to see Olympic Gymnast McKayla Maroney charged with production of child pornography.
I know, it is a ludicrous proposal on its face. Maroney didn’t mean for these pictures to go out; her personal pictures were part of the celebrity leaked photo fiasco from Labor Day weekend. At first, Maroney denied the photos, buy later claimed they were taken of her at age 17. In turn, someone started a petition on the White House “We the People” petition site to charge Maroney with producing CP. As of my writing, 561 have signed the petition. Full Opinion Piece

As one of those who has slightly more information about the content in question, I must say good luck. Everyone assumes the recent batch of leaked photos were largely sexual in nature and some of them may very well be, but not all of them. Let’s just say a good defense attorney could argue that many of the photos aren’t pornographic or sexual. Nudity is a gray area where what is legal or illegal less defined than government agencies would ever willingly admit.
I agree with wanting to produce over the top examples to highlight the ridiculousness of criminal law and the justice system. Perhaps there are better ways of achieving the goal while generating less collateral damage.
As much as I hate the registry and all associated laws, and as much as I hate seeing anyone being subject to the irrational insanity and mind set that the registry and all associated laws are, I believe oncefallen is right and I do believe I agree every point made in this op-ed. I posted on another thread that I hoped she didn’t wind up as a registrant but I now hope she is prosecuted and convicted. I got really pissed when it was pointed out how lightening fast the FBI removed the pictures and how they let all the cp remain posted. This proves that cp could be taken down; I have to assume the FBI and other government agencies don’t want to do that.
