This peer-led support group was started by a registrant in LA to provide a supportive community for people struggling to succeed under the challenges of sex offense registration. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What happens at these meetings?
People are encouraged to share their own thoughts, feelings, and experiences. We do not discuss or name offenses, or preach to the choir about the general injustices of the criminal justice system. We simply acknowledge that we or our loved ones are required to register.
Are meetings confidential?
What is said in a meeting stays in a meeting. You can choose to go by only your first name in meetings, but the group facilitator must know your real name to ensure participants are directly impacted people.
Do I have to participate in the meeting if I attend?
Everyone is encouraged to participate to whatever extent we feel comfortable, and we have the right to remain silent.
My case is unique (for example, it’s very minor, I am innocent, or it’s a very old case). Is this group for me?
This group is about overcoming challenges of life as a registrant, which is something all of us must live with regardless of our underlying case. We try to accept people just as they are, and we avoid making judgments.
Can I attend a meeting if I am currently under supervision (probation, parole)?
It is up to you to make sure you are not in violation. You can ask your PO. The meetings are for people 18 years and older.
I hear that there is new law that might relieve me from registration requirement. Is that true?
Yes! The law creates a path off the registry for some people and changes some of the laws about the online registry. There will be a lawyer at the meeting to give a brief overview of the law and provide information about how you can find out how this law impacts you.
This is an excellent idea. There are nearly a million of us nation wide, that is a lot of political clout, but the energy must be focused, and we must be organized and communicating. Part of the reason they won’t let people on probation communicate with others is they don’t want us organizing. that is why the slave owners didn’t want slaves reading and writing. Networking and communicating is the answer. What is happening is very wrong, we have all paid our debt, a lifetime of abuse is not legal. This will crumble and it already is showing signs.
I am planning on attending. Coming from Saratoga. Have room in car for three more.
Finally HERE instead of always L.A>
THANK YOU Acsol Staff & Board!!!
When does the meeting take place? Is it monthly? I would really like to get the emotional support from the group. Please let me know. I’ll be traveling from far Northern California to attend. Thank you.
