House Judiciary Committee Falsely Claims Credit For Stopping 90% Of All Sex Trafficking Because Of FOSTA

[techdirt.com – 7/24/18]

For no clear reason at all, the Republicans* on the House Judiciary Committee released a video on YouTube earlier this week praising themselves for stopping online sex trafficking via FOSTA/SESTA. It’s… quite something.

The video makes a number of blatantly false claims from various members of the House Judiciary, but let’s focus mainly on the claims of Ann Wagner, whose original bill kicked off the process that became FOSTA/SESTA. She’s been spreading moral panic nonsense about sex trafficking and the internet for ages, so it’s no surprise that she continues to do so. But, at one point in the video she states:

“We have shut down nearly 90% of the online sex trafficking business and ads.”

If a politician is talking about $EX, everyone should assume that they are lying. That is the starting point. Unless a politician gives concrete proof that what they are saying is true, assume it is lies.

Wouldn’t it be great if it were illegal for politicians to lie? That is a law that we actually need.

It’s simple, really. If a person who is elected at the state or federal level; and that person is talking, writing, tweeting, texting, posting a commercial video, advertisement, or you tube video…….you can assume that person is lying. This is why we must make our advancements in the courtroom, rather than through legislation. While it’s true that we can make small steps via legislation, it’s also true that the professional liars will continuously change and tweak the laws. They do this for votes, or money, or both. They actually don’t care about us one way or another. We are just an easy way for the professional liars to make people think they are doing something worthwhile. Judges are about 10,000 miles from perfect. But we will have a lot more luck with them than we will with people who are running to keep their jobs, and increase their power, continuously.

Oh yes, their unnecessary legislation stopped 90% of sex trafficking…. and the biggest inaugural crowd ever….. and I promise not to ___ __ ____ _____! Lying, reality-twisting scumbags!! 😡
