GEORGE COUNTY, Miss. (WKRG) – Employees from the Sheriff’s offices in both George and Greene counties were recently recognized for their work to keep all registered sex offenders in their jurisdictions compliant with state law.
“[Citizens] should definitely be proud of these counties. They are really working hard to ensure that their communities are as safe as possible and everyone is aware of the registered offenders in their area,” said registry director Megan Costilow.
Most sex offenders must re-register and update their address every three months. Each sheriff’s office in the county is tasked with making sure offenders meet the requirement to stay in compliance.
The awards were given to agencies who have been able to maintain 100% compliance of their offenders for a minimum of 97% of the last calendar year. 36 counties were honored with a Certificate of Merit for this achievement during the state’s Sex Offender Registration & Compliance Symposium last month.
There are currently 12,765 registered sex offenders in Mississippi. 416 of those offenders are non-compliant.
Is this a joke? They are getting a reward for keeping sex offenders in compliance? How about, these PFRs are not doing anything wrong and just want to live their lives peacefully. How hard is it to keep law abiding citizens compliant? It’s like watching a baby to make sure it’s not committing a crime. Maybe, they should ensure that drug dealers are not dealing drugs to kids, and drunk people don’t kill kids. That would actually require work, which they are not capable of. That would be more worthy of a reward. Such morons.
There is something sickeningly dystopian about this, like an executioner receiving an award for a 100% kill rate.
On a lighter note, were the PFRs handed a suitable-for-framing certificate, as well? Seems they deserve one given the important role they played in such an inspirational success story.
Either WKRG or Megan Costilow is identifying that registrants are not citizens of the community. They are pariah that much always be under surveillance. Odd, but I thought once you’re out of custody, then you shouldn’t be surveilled upon like any other convict?
The registry isn’t punishment, but the states are allowed to force you to do things involuntarily under penalty of law.
13th amendment states involuntary servitude is prohibited unless it is punishment for a crime. The registry is violating this constitutional right as the registry is levied on a citizen after a conviction, but the state/feds are saying it is not punishment. They want it both ways and both ways cannot exist simultaneously.
No mention about how this was achieved. Makes me wonder what was done, and what more will be.
Given the mass incarceration scheme that is the FTR laws, I can only image that:
* The Sheriffs aggressively forced registration compliance. They came and got the PFRs, drug them into the station and got the required information.
* They maintain such an intense climate of fear, the PFRs are falling all over themselves to remain in compliance.
* They were “forgiving” about minor technical violations. Overlooked the BS, to maintain their record.
How else is possible? These two countries are just lucky?
Any ideas?
So, is there any law stating that this is even legal what they are doing? Once done with probation do you even have to comply with answering the door? The only good thing, is if they help the registrants get into compliance without arresting them and throwing them in jail. But how is the public going to view this? On one side they’re going to say, we need cops to always oversee them, and on the other side they’re going to say we’re wasting resources and just keep them in prison. I don’t know, it’s going to be interesting to see what other people have to say.
Symposium….. certainly won’t t find that ambiguous word in the constitution. Plain socialists granting the same kind of recognition granted to those in 1930s Germany. This became the cause to hide for the individuals sought. Because the DDI use operates in the social construct (of barriers) it’s effect subtle or squishy to define. This point is what makes it, the DDI, ubiquitous (Packingham -Speech) in nature, much like the definition of ” indecent ” or ” violent.”
An appropriate question in terms of FTR situation is about the accuracy of compliance. Given that internet IDs and Emails are easily created and easily discarded or abandoned like cheap cell phones real compliance is hard to get. I’m a border boy so interstate travel is regular and unreported. Kinda like those “spam risk” calls I keep getting. So let them pat themselves on their backs for keeping their plantations servants placated. Mostly its about optics in an election year, but they’re collecting for collecting sake alone.
Actually, it’s the registrants that should be applauded in those counties. With all the hoops they have to jump through, tripwires to avoid, and constant surveillance to catch them if they trip up, I dare say most, if not all, of those quoted who are being self congratulatory about their efforts would fail miserably at living in our boots. We’ll see who gets the praise in the end when it’s all sorted out. I guarantee it will be a shocker!
of course they got a reward they have decades of experience! With a Rope Too!
They need to be reminded of this! flood there email with it
Look i can see some people’s hair is on fire and i am not saying to promote violence on my behalf or anything other than speaking the truth ,facts, recorded history, sent to this jounalist who looks like he is about 17 who wrote this fine piece of parrot cage fodder as much as can be sent
So why are these two counties crowing? And how is it any county is unable to keep them all compliant? After all, they know where everyone is and the Registry makes it impossible for anything wrong or untoward to happen, right? Good thing Andy & Barney are focusing on these high-risk criminals and not on something like meth or robbery.
I just can’t get over the phrase “their offenders” — a good reminder that the nation’s criminal justice system has its genesis in a slave society.
OK Mississippi… Add a little racism to it and we are all offenders. The people of that county must be proud… of themselves. Seems justice systems are competing in who’s breaking Old Testament Commandments.. .. I think Janice said it back a long time ago ..Let my people go or do we all offend in thought and deed. Guess a murderer is better than a sex offender these days or who looks at the CA article on here.
“Mississippi law enforcement recognizes itself as being the equivalent of 5th grade class in which everyone is excellent and everyone gets a trophy!” 😒🙄
I need someone to explain how the sheriff can take credit for this when its the REGISTERED PERSONS themselves who do what they need to do the remain compliant. Is the sheriff registering on behalf of the RPs? No!! When I go verify my info, its ME who did what needed to be done, not the sheriff.
What a moron.
I guess they didn’t stop to think that it was in fact the registrants themselves that were keeping with the compliance laws without the help of LEOs. Maybe we all deserve an award for helping out the police and not repeating our misdemeanor offenses from 20 yrs ago…………😎
My first question is, what are these fools doing to keep registrants 100% compliant? I have some unpleasant image of a country sheriff pointing a shotgun at them.
Now they’re getting rewards for people forced to register not committing new crimes wow.
That’s why PFR need to throw massive events, I wanna see the local police department try and register 300 people within 5 working days of thee event,
I wanna see a line of PFR wrapped around the police station sleeping in tents, 2 weeks before the event, that would get The people in Washington’s attention.
That’s how you publicly and peacefully dismantle the registry.
I wonder if the parking patrol/ “meter readers” get a trophy for not giving out any tickets (simply because all the car parkers in the area compliantly pay their parking fees). 🤨
Thus, the meter readers – like their Registrant Compliance Unit – would be getting a trophy for doing absolutely nothing except confirming already existing compliance. 🤔
If they have 100% compliance everyone must be perfectly protected from becoming a victim of a sex offense and therefore there must be no new victims in those counties right?
Hey! Where my star to put on my forehead and a pat on the back?
Oh so now LEOs have an “awards ceremony” for witch hunting us? You can’t make this stuff up.
Where do they plan on hanging their certificate? In their bedroom, living room, garage, pastor’s study, office cubicle….nah!
They’re going straight home to bury that certificate in a trunk amongst their fishing gear. No one in their right mind would display a document with the word “SEX OFFENDER” in big bold lettering. Being that it’s Mississippi, usually people can’t read the fine print underneath the headlines.
