Every year I find my self wondering why no one has ever challenged the fact that we are the only class of former criminals that are tortured year after year on a day that is supposed to be a celebration of our life. That we are interrogated year after year like we committed our offenses yesterday, that we spend the week before and after our birthdays in a state of heightened anxiety and in my case heightened stress. Even though we comply fully we are never sure that they entered all the information correctly and that their mistake may cost us years of our freedom. Every year I find myself more radicalized and more and more of the same opinion as Will. Maybe I need counsellng but I do not trust the mental health workers because I know their “reports” can have the same effect as a lazy data entry clerk at the sherriffs office.
I have been interested in taking the Ca Notary exam. I read that CP conviction is a disqualification, yet at the same time it says for misdemeanors ( which mine is ) it needs to be at least 5 yrs since completion of probation( which I have ) and background checks are only 7 yrs back ( which I am beyond ). I am wondering if after I am removed next yr will I be eligible for the exam. It is an excellent side hustle that can make a person easily over $100,000 a yr. Always worry about asking a government agency because they might decide to close a loop hole just for the hell of it.
“The suit filed …… alleges that ____ _____ misused her position as a social worker with the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, sending hundreds of often sexually explicit texts to the father and grooming him to have sex with her.”
🤔 I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen the term grooming applied to an adult. Perhaps she was just 21st Century “courting” him.🤷🏻♂️😒
I posted but at the end of month so might not have been seen. My question is which is the anniversary date to be able to petition for removal. Is it the date you originally registered (mine is April) or the annual registration date ( mine is July ).
I know people comment a good bit about travel on this site, but I am going to raise a topic that is currently impacting me and also impacts many others in this scenario. The group housing unit where I live in southern California is closing at the end of April. I can afford a lodging area of a $1,000 – 1,200 a month. It does not have to be in So. Cal. Some of you may have insight into how a person needing housing can locate it. How should a person on the registry maneuver through the search process? I am retired and would very much appreciate advice. Finally, I look forward to joining lobby day this week. Thanks to Janice and the ACSOL Board for their organizing efforts!!!!!
California registrant here. It’s not clear what the reporting requirements are when taking a purely online class offered by a college outside of California. I don’t trust the local PD to know what they are talking about were I to ask them… Nor to answer in good faith. I know the state DOJ has a form to use when taking an online course, but it seems to only apply when the course is offered by an institution in California.
If you get a chance, watch the movie “Trumbo”. It is about the communist witch hunts of the 50’s and 60’s. It really highlights how ignorance and fear can destroy lives of all it touches. It also shows how ingenuity and persistence can prevail.
Hey everyone. Is anyone clear of the Michigan requirements for taking an on- line only course. As I understand it, I would still need to report my attendance. Also, on the other end, I guess I just check the school’s rules for SO on line attendance. Researching screenwriting courses .
Good morning all,
I just called Van Nuys PD for my annual. Unbeknownst to me, they are “out of the office” next week so the first available appointment puts me 1 day late. Bday is the 11, appointment is the 19. She said it’s not an issue, yeah right! Any suggestions or anyone experience this? Please help!
Certs of Rehab in California: Is there any way ASCOL can lobby to get the laws changed regarding these certs? As of now, anyone who served a stint in state prison on a sex charge cannot obtain a certificate of rehabilitation, even after the required waiting period. The only ones who can obtain a COR are those who did not serve a prison sentence. Yes, SB384 was a blessing and we have our hero Jerry Brown to thank for it. But ex-cons still can’t get a COR to show the world they have been rehabilitated.
Thanks everyone. I’ll just grab the free info available on line and figure out our from there.
Today I went to court (virtually) to petition to get off community supervision for life in NJ from a crime I committed 28 years ago and convicted 24 years ago and sentenced to 3 years lock up (I did 21 months). I could have petitioned back in 2017 but I had a violation of one of my numerous conditions in 2008 which reset the 15 year clock. NJ law said nope. Today the judge approved my petition. Yay.
Can someone explain this Illinois bill in simple terms? Lol. Thanks in advance. HB5541
“Amends the Sex Offender Registration Act. Provides that the Illinois State Police may (rather than shall) mail verification letters to registered sex offenders. Provides that the Illinois State Police may adopt rules to allow for the use of an electronic registration portal to comply with the verification letters. Provides that the registering agency shall enter the information into the Illinois State Police Sex Offender database (rather than the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS)). Provides that the Illinois State Police may, subject to appropriation for this purpose, establish an electronic registration portal to be used by sex offenders and law enforcement to comply with the Act. Provides that the Illinois State Police may, subject to appropriation for this purpose, establish an electronic registration portal to be utilized by sex offenders and law enforcement to comply with the Act. Deletes a provision that the Illinois State Police shall establish and promulgate rules and procedures regarding the administration of this Fund. Provides that moneys in the Offender Registration Fund shall be allocated pursuant to the registration and penalty provisions of the Act, respectively”
Standing by in Sacramento for Lobby Day. See you in the morning!
When a conviction feels like a job, then it’s punitive in nature.and scope. Especially when it requires constant maintenance and accuracy to avoid another conviction.
… Much thanks for keeping the ebb and flow of the forum moving forth…
I have been slow to do this , but a HUGE thank you very much to Janice. With her skill & knowledge I was recently terminated from federal supervision in San Francisco. I had a term of 10 years, & we got it terminated 4.5 years early. One thing of importance that I got from the hearing was that I had completed at least half of my supervision time. Even the judge stated that only one year is required, but he also stated that less than half is a deal breaker for him. many websites say different things but this is a concrete example. Janice’s paperwork, briefs were all spot on, she addressed everything that my particular judge considered to be of importance, and had an awesome courtroom presence that I feel completely won the day. It is so wonderful not to have to deal with all of the federal probation BS. I am so happy. Now I am working on getting a cert from my therapy/group provider, & hopefully in 4 years when my ten years since release from the halfway house are completed I will have been moved from tier 3 to tier 1, if the legislature follows CASOMB’s recommendation… Fingers crossed
Conspiracy theory?
Spinning off of the recently posted story regarding the law suit filled in Texas claiming the owners of Porn Hub are negligent with regards to keeping minors from accessing their site. Adding in some information I just saw regarding Personal Data security, and governmental abuse… here goes…
The State is trying to push people into using facial recognition more and more. They are going to continue to attack kids accessing adult websites to drive forcing people to create facial recognition profiles to access those sites. The hope being that that works so well, companies like Amazon will start using these profiles to confirm purchases… with the banks then requiring the use to authorize credit card transactions for online purchases. Success at one thing then justifies the expansion until, everything requires you to verify your identity via facial recognition.
Confirmed, and constantly updated facial recognition profiles for everyone! Profiles that can then be used to create a “Social Credit” score, similar to what is done in China? Also a “Danger Score” to see just exactly how dangerous it is for a person to be at a park, the mall, a sporting event…etc, etc, etc…
Facial recognition that puts everyone on a registry that tracks your activities, first online but later everywhere. That constantly evaluates you, and provides this evaluation to everyone around you. Providing “critically important” data about you so, if needed, security can monitor and everyone can be aware just hope dangerous you might be to them!
Basically the same thing at the Social Credit Scores in China. Starting with people on parole/probation and/or the registry, but quickly expanding to absolutely everyone. Crime will drive that… especially recidivism of every kind. Every mass shooting event will push them one step closer to constant monitoring of everyone, with alerts provided to those near you, “As needed”.
All the advantages of having Big Brother constantly watching everyone, without the appearance of Big Brother constantly watching everyone. Fear will drive this.. as will pandering to the egos of high score, “VIP” citizens. Special treatment, offers, discounts, etc….
So this Porn Hub lawsuit is just part of a bigger plan, or I’m lost is some kind of Orwellian Conspiracy Theory?
Hey folks, just wanted to share an idea. We have been hell bent on getting SCOTUS to revisit Smith v Doe on the grounds that much of the legislation enacted after the original ruling definitely moved the needle further toward meeting the definition of punitive. Well another thought occurred to me.
The mechanisms used in the enforcement of SORNA and IML amounts to a chilling version of INTERNMENT. I learned this the hard way last year when I tried to enter Mexico and was turned away out of “national security concerns” from information they received from the U.S. State Department.
We do not have freedom of movement if we must notify the government in advance any time we wish to take a step in any direction.
That is all. Just sharing a point that I have small hope may provide fuel for further legal argument.
April will be my count down month. One yr to go from there to freedom. I know things can change , but don’t think about it in those terms. I have put together my “ petition pack” with all forms filled out except for dates. Every form is earmarked as to whom it gets delivered to. It’s all been uploaded as well onto a file for safe keeping.
I have been contacting real estate agents in different countries to start sending me properties meeting my criteria ( When AMD acquired Xilinx , my Xilinx stocked rolled over 1:1.73 shares and I have been fortunate to have 1000 shares of Xilinx) I can definitely feel the tide turning for me. This carnival ride is almost over. I can feel the weight lifting each day.
@way too long
That’s awesome, so glad to hear you’re getting close (only 1-year to go). I remember when both of us were only a year or two into our convictions. Felons, forking out money we didn’t have for “treatment”, both looking at lifetime registration, you had just lost a loved one, etc. We met up once for coffee to commiserate. Incredibly thought time for both of us. God willing, Janice will have me off the registry in the next few months.
How did lobby day go? I’m just sitting here in suspense waiting to know.
Look at this piece of S#@t bill in the current IL session (summary provided by IL Voices):
SB2818 Conviction record can’t be used to refuse a property lease or sale except if someone is a registered sex offender.
This bill is sponsored by three state senate democrats:
Sen. Rachel Ventura – Don Harmon and Mike Simmons
The proposed bill is much longer than the summary above and provides civil rights protections to prevent discrimination against people with convictions, but WTF is with the carve out?! So once again, we can lease and sell to murderers, arsonists, and people who have defrauded others out of their life savings, but not a person forced to register for a whole variety of reasons.
does anyone know why we lost Caleb Kruckenberg as an attorney in the Pacific Legal Foundation case?
See pacermonitor
By the time I’m able to petition off the registry I’ll have spent 24 1/2 years on the registry and if you add the petition process which can take up 3 to 6 months, it’s more like 25 years.
The other day I was complaining to my counselor about my life and she said oh, you’re young you got time you can always bounce back, life is what you make it, Then she stopped realizing I am not one of her normal clients, I’ma 290 registrant and I can’t bounce back from that, there is no second chances or any type of redemption, I’m stuck in the past and trapped in the future.
I’ve always wonder what life would be like as an adult off the registry, I know what it’s like being a kid or a teenager off the registry but not as adult.
All I do know is I don’t know how much longer I can take on the registry it’s been along road I’ve fought a lot of battles with law enforcement and the District attorneys office, and I managed to stay out of prison BUT the trauma still remains.
