FL: ‘Not welcome here’: Clewiston passes law to keep sex offenders farther away from schools

Source: fox4now.com 4/22/25

CLEWISTON, Fla. — Clewiston passed a new ordinance to push sex offenders farther away from schools.

On Monday, city council passed an ordinance requiring sex offenders to live at least 2,500 feet from schools, parks, and playgrounds. Until now, offenders only had to live 1,000 feet away – the minimum state requirement.

Clewiston Police Chief Tom Lewis said the city needed to act after seeing more offenders move in – taking advantage of Clewiston’s less strict rules. He said this change brings Clewiston in line with nearby cities and he hopes it will prevent sex offenders from moving to the city.

It would actually be an insult to feel “welcome” in Florida.

0 ft to 2,000 miles will not stop sex offenses from happening in a community, however politicians think their are experts instead of listening to people with actual knowledge. Forcing human beings out of your community isn’t going to prevent or stop sex crimes from happening.

There should be the fine print shared showing the 95-97% stats which detail those who have not yet offended within the circle of trust and in positions of authority are the people they should be worried about such as parents, teachers, and LE.

More geographical incarceration.

The good city council and LE of this illustrious town should receive the IL doc published here on ACSOL yesterday for their reading leisure to understand the greater picture of their impacts and their own selfish desire for political cred in times of elections.

The entire town is less than 4.5 sq miles. You could literally buy property outside the city limit and still be within 2500 ft of a park playground or school, and they could do nothing about it. What a joke.

Couldn’t FAC use the fact cities/towns are imposing laws much worse than the state standard to thwart the newly passed law? Also, California laid the ground word that residency restrictions, via Re:Taylor, are more harmful such that it creates more homelessness due to banishment intent because the city/town can create a small park to expand the banishment zone.

Thats what makes the city safe people forced to register living on the streets Where’s that logistical. What needs to happen is to find a place to camp every day and re-register, so it ties up their processes. just make sure to give notice ha ha.
