MELBOURNE, FL – Melbourne police arrested a 46-year-old Cocoa man Nov. 6 after officers said he was walking through the parking lot of Melbourne High School in violation of a local ordinance restricting registered sex offenders from entering certain areas.
Why was the man arrested near Melbourne High School?
According to an affidavit signed by Officer Emily Renken, Renken and Officer McGaha were patrolling South Babcock Street at about 9:07 p.m. when they saw a man in a black hoodie and black shorts walking through the parking lot of Melbourne High School at…

Wow, they really had nothing better to do.
School closed. No kids around. Looks like is going to rain – taking a shortcut to get home faster. What crime did he commit? The man was arrested and charged with a crime. Also charged for a crime for not carrying a state id card as that is required for pfrs. It is all insane. The rest of the world must think we are idiots and have lost our minds..
Thank god we live in California. Just thank god. Florida’s stuck in the dark ages.
I think we should all email Melbourne PD and let them know how they wasted taxpayer resources while doing nothing to prevent any crime. I wonder if any crimes at all were committed that night in Melbourne, and yet LE was here doing this instead.
The ACSOL title …entrapment by geography… reminds me of an incident with my po years ago. I lived in a county of more than one million people, the metro area includes a few million people and one can drive for more than an hour in any direction and still be in a city.
I applied for a job when I was unemployed that was located 1 mile outside the county boundary and the place wanted me to come in for an interview. So I asked my po permission to leave the county for the job interview as I was required by the court to do so. My po said no. I replied one of the judge’s stipulations was for me to obtain and keep employment and pay child support, and this might be an opportunity to obtain a job and comply with the orders from the judge.
My po responded I do not care. I asked why can I not cross the county line for a job interview. My po stated you could commit a sexual crime outside the county against a minor. I responded if I wanted to do that, I could do that here in this county with a population of more than one million people so why would I need to go to an adjacent county with a smaller population to do what you say? I also asked how does me being on one side of an imaginary line on a map make the community any safer. My po’s face got red, she raised her voice and said “NO, and get out of my office because you are raising my blood pressure”.
I felt entrapment by geography. This scenario happened again with the same po except this time the place was inside the county boundary but the po refused to allow me to go for an interview because the place was 800 feet from a school. I also remember telling my family that the people who work for the county sex po department posses no common sense. I have felt entrapment by geography many times while registered, and even though now off paper, I still fee entrapment by geography because I do not have free movement within this country. It is all a bunch of bs.
Make them provide a map of the boundaries and put signs up of where boundaries exist. You cannot follow the law if one is not provided the boundaries to do so. Not saying they did not know the law, but to arrest one who is crossing the parking lot to avoid the oncoming rain between two sidewalks is about petty as it gets. Shows the small mindedness of FLA LE, laws, and the elected officials who believe this is best.
