Twenty minutes off the Puget Sound coast is an island that was the home to a state penitentiary until it closed in 2011. Now, it is used as a facility for the civil commitment of the state’s most violent sex offenders.

This was a depressing segment. Firstly, the first guy seemed so unsure of himself to whether he will re-offend. But then again, he’s been incarcerated since he was 13! Now he is near 40! Who wouldn’t be? I just wish him the best. As for the second guy, the man aiming to be a social worker, he seems like he has it figured out. These people should not be locked into “hospitals” after the completion of their prison sentences. At most, they should be forced into halfway houses with heavy supervision and perhaps therapy (for a defined parole period). But one therapy session per month? I know there has been recent debate on this website to whether therapy is effective; but it seems the government concedes not even trying to “rehabilitate” when they are only giving one therapy session per month to those they have deemed the most dangerous.

Also, I agree with the public defender that if the government is simply going to “civilly commit” people into “hospitals,” the government should honestly call it a “life sentence.” The only benefit that these “hospitals” seem to provide is the job security that they give the local communities.

Many are truely blessed and/or Lucky, not being SVP’s for one thing, nor any longer committed (Calif WA)
and the other 13 or so blacked in for ID’ing the States that do have lockup longterm continued sentence post lockup.
It makes you think we are mostly on the outside and NOT like that, being committed post sentence completion. SAD is right. These persons, mostly male will not see outside those walls until passing.
Being Thankful for not being in the SVP title or continual lockup form from the Public is not as bad as being
continually punished out here.
Thanks to the individual for forwarding the WA State HBO story of this and finding it to post and for the approval. Worth the minutes to watch …be thankful and think…THEY have it worse except for the one’s awaiting execution of course. CAMP SNOOPY vs. ASH or CMF or PATTON….Camp Snoopy = CMC
