A convicted sex offender became the first Broward County inmate to die from the new coronavirus, underscoring concern over how the pandemic will pose problems for detention facilities across South Florida.
Alan Pollock, 64, died at Northwest Medical Center in Margate on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Broward Public Defender’s Office, which represented him.
Broward County’s jails have had at least five inmates test positive for the coronavirus, which has been spreading in detention centers across the U.S.
Nationwide, the disease has infected hundreds of detainees as court negotiations take place to release inmates from jails and minimize their risk of exposure.
It is unconscionable that a man has died in jail after he failed to provide law enforcement with his new home address. This is exactly the situation we are trying to avoid in CA due to law enforcement’s in-person registration requirement. How many deaths will it take to get the attention of law enforcement, the Dept. of Corrections, the Governor or someone else with a backbone? In-person registration must STOP NOW! If it isn’t, we must continue to file lawsuits so that judges will ultimately tell law enforcement, Dept. of Corrections and/or the Governor what to do and how to do it. Stopping in-person registration is easy to do as evidenced by the Los Angeles Police Department that started phone registrations for all registrants more than 2 weeks ago. The states of Pennsylvania and Oregon are also setting good examples. For the rest of the states, it’s time to JUST DO IT!
How this pandemic is effecting jails and prison is a good topic to look up and yes it is very discrimatory to the sex offender when they are labeled violent from the get go and placed with a tier label or something of that nature. It is very biased in many ways when those small time thieves that may not be labeled violent are more qualified for relese during this crisis.
Even the drug dealers are considered more qualified than those on the sex registry. What is fair today in bringing back true justice and basic principals. A good study of this would make a good argument for anyone today.
