CLARENDON COUNTY, S.C. (WACH) — On Friday, a former Clarendon County deputy and victims advocate was arrested by South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents.
Sabrina Mellerson, 34, has been arrested and faces charges of misconduct in office and embezzlement.
SLED conducted the investigation at the request of Clarendon County Sheriff Tim Baxley.
According to reports, Mellerson is accused of taking money from sex offender registrants in her role as a deputy at the Clarendon County Sheriff’s Office.
On April 7, Mellerson confessed to SLED Agents that she took cash from payments made to the sheriff’s office and used the money for her personal use.
Nothing surprising here. A lot of county jails will only take money orders for this very reason.
I would argue she should be required to refund every fee she’s ever collected from every registrant in that county. But I doubt whatever penalty she receives will much beyond being fired and blacklisted from another LE job.
It would also be nice if the registrants there would collectively get together and sue the sheriff. Seems like a good chance to get the stupid fees waived if nothing else.
Just add this to the very long list of abusive events that show the registry is punishment, and that nobody with a Price Club card has to endure this.
Wonder how many people have been charged and convicted for failure to register because of the money being stolen…
