California RSOL Joins National RSOL in Seattle

California RSOL joined national RSOL this week at the National Conference for State Legilsators (NCSL) in Seattle. More than 5,000 elected officials, staff and lobbyists attended this annual event. It is the third year national RSOL has had a booth at the conference.

“The NCSL conference provided us with unique opportunities to meet with legislators and their stafff in an informal setting,” stated CA RSOL president Janice Bellucci. “We provided them with important facts regarding registered citizens such as the low rate of re-offense.”

FullSizeRenderDuring the conference, a hot topic of discussion was the 19-year-old in Indiana who was recently sentenced to 25 years on the registry because he had sex with a 14-year-old who lied about her age. Despite the fact that the girl testified about her lie, the judge provided the young man with that harsh sentence.

At the RSOL booth, information was also provided regarding the number of registered citizens by state and the research results of Dr. Karl Hanson which show that a registered citizen who does not re-offend in 17 years is no more likely to commit a new sex offense than a person who has never been convicted of a sex offense.

“This is a valuable use of my time,” stated Bellucci. “I believe that California RSOL should return to the NCSL conference next year in Chicago. I hope that many members of Calfiornia RSOL will join me.”
