The September 1988 rape and murder of 29-year-old Diane Ballasiotes in Seattle, Washington, followed by the 1989 rape and sexual mutilation of a 7-year-old Tacoma boy, were the seedlings of today’s nationwide sex offender registry laws – a 50-state network that tracks over 805,000 registrants and whose usefulness as a crime-prevention tool has been questioned and criticized. “Registration, Tracking of Sex Offenders Drives Mass Incarceration Numbers and Costs” do pay for gross number of lazy people. There are, now, too much money to be made to stop.
” Improvements to registries, they argued, would “mediate the stigma resulting from the sex offender label and reduce barriers to offender reintegration.” Consequently, they urged the implementation of five broad reforms: Juveniles should not be subjected to sex offender registration; registration durations should be guided by risk assessment research; procedures for relief and removal from registries should be available; discretion should be returned to judges; and sex offender residency restrictions should be abolished.”
“Ending the registry would be unpopular and unwise.” they say. Well I can certainly agree it would be unpopular, given the chimp like nature of the American electorate, but unwise? That’s a different story.
Unpopular???
It would coz panic among the crazies for about 24hrs then they’ll simply focus on hating someone or something else….world keeps awn spin’n.
God forbid they focus time and resources to helping our homeless and idk fixing our roads and traffic nightmare amongst hundreds of other things in this country that need some damn tlc.
The public was sold a LIE with Megan’s Law and the AWA. This whole sick system is built on myth, ignorance, fear, and hatred.
“”This is not a group that is going to garner a lot of sympathy from the general public.”
^And this is why it’s been on the books for so long. If these laws are the “will of the people” then the people are truly willfully ignorant.
“There has been a 30 percent drop in reported rapes from 1995 to today, [Eli] Lehrer noted. And while the U.S. population has grown about 13 percent from 1999 to 2013, the number of child sex abuse cases tumbled from 88,000 to 61,000 during that period.
“‘While these numbers and any others associated with sex crimes are probably best considered as relative measures since so many sexual offenses go unreported,’ Lehrer said, ‘they reflect a significant drop in the offenses that registries are intended to prevent.’”
Someone should let Mr. Lehrer know that correlation does not mean causation (this is a very common error or logic). In other words, just because a black cat crosses my path and then my house catches fire, it doesn’t mean the black cat caused my house to catch fire. Or, put into the specific case here, that registries exist and that those crimes have gone down in no way means the registries had any effect on the crime rates. They may have, they may not have; there is no way to tell by this correlation.

Great article. Unfortunately the people that we NEED to be reading these articles are not. We need more articles in the New York Times and others, you know, sources that Judges or lawmakers actually read.
Why did the author present a graphic re-hashing of all the various sex crimes?? Was that necessary to the discussion…. or was it intended to inflame and whip up the torch & pitchfork villagers?? By placing those lengthy re-hashung early in the article, he minimizes and taints the sincerity of his later discussion of SORs.
“Parents wanting to protect their own children should worry much more about their own friends and relatives than random strangers.”
Enough said.
