I couldn’t ask this question because of technical difficulties. When I went for my annual I noticed the department was enthusiastic about promoting this petition process. The clerk even gave me a brochure about a program offered by the public defender’s office to help for free filling out the petition. Now if I was still a normal, law enforcement trusting person who had not gone through these years of registration, I would think they are really trying to help. Hope I am wrong. Then a part of me is thinking, well, isn’t this an opportunity for the DA to retry a person. Doesn’t this process allow them get warrants, to question people to invade your personal life if they decide it serves their purpose? Of course, they would not do this to everyone. It would be too expensive, but what would their criteria be? Even if like me, who has lived a law abiding life, what if they decide to do an investigation. At best it can be very disruptive, at worst leading to new charges, even if it is some allegation manufactured by a neighbor or co-worker? I am not paranoid, but I believe always expect and prepare oneself for the worst and be surprised by best. I don’t want to scare anyone off from filling out the petition. It is a great unexpected benefit to many and could improve their lives. We must do the hurdles, but should we expect and prepare for this to be another rough ride?
It wasn’t possible to ask Tier questions, but the bottom line for me is that it is a good idea to wait until the wrinkles get ironed out. Too much uncertainty.
