Living with 290: Boy how times have changed!

Being on the registry has not only affected and changed my life in ways that only the 750,000 plus people and families would begin to understand.

I got on the registry in 2002. Boy how times have changed! I raised my two children and had primary custody of my son and daughter. Both of them went to a private school up to high school and my son went on to the Air Force.

I made good money back then running a mom and pop store for nearly twelve years until everything changed. SORNA listed my employer and law enforcement had to verify my employer. Not many companies want to be on the registry and have U.S. Marshals, FBI, homeland security, ICE and possibly the Secret Service showing up so I was let go with warm regards.

Since being on the registry I would say the biggest problem is vigilantism. Neighbors want you out to protect the community and not decrease home values and you want to protect your family so it really puts people in awkward and dangerous situations. I have had a guy threaten me with a gun. I’ve been in near fist fights with neighbors. 90% of neighbors will just ignore you! It’s the 10% that don’t realize you will not allow them to hurt your family either that becomes a problem.

My children could never have friends over because I didn’t want the potential problems with it. I successfully completed sex offender therapy and really thought I would be able to move on with my life after more than a decade from my original misdemeanor offense that ended up getting me listed as a tier two offender. The longer you are on the registry the greater the chance for getting rearrested for added infractions added on years later and elevating your tier level.

My penalties for failure to register are much more severe than my original charge. I didn’t have this many stipulations when I was on probation. The government really put me back on probation way after I was done with probation.
