Shawna: A Life on the Sex Offender Registry

I met Shawna a year into filming “Untouchable,” a documentary that examines sex offender laws through the lives of individuals on the sex offender registry. It was at an Oklahoma treatment center where she was participating in a mandatory group therapy session. This is something that is not really spoken much about. Often, when people think of sex offenders, it’s always men. Some lawyers like Nicole Pittman (whom I no longer trust after her statement re: SB26 where she threw adult RCs under the bus) commit to helping juvenile RCs. Yet no one talks about women RCs, nor do they have lawyers who represent this group of RCs which come with a unique set of circumstances. Mothers are priority number 1 caregivers to children, and yet women RCs are being stripped of their rights to care for their children, to commit to their children’s development and well being, to be a strong supporter and advocate for their children. I really do feel much empathy for Shawna.
