VA: Lawmakers are unfair in targeting sex offenders (Guest Column)

Mary Davye Devoy: THE 2018 VIRGINIA General Assembly session is my 10th as a volunteer advocate for a smarter Virginia Sex Offender Registry. I use more than 20 years of data to support my work and offer fact-based recommendations for improving the laws. Full Column

Again, more laws that serve no purpose other than to allow the grandstanding of obscure legislators either trying to establish a respectable record for his reelection campaign or to cover other, less than ethical activity.

  2. New Person

The inconsistency of the process of law is very demeaning as it induces a certain group of persons as second class citizens.

Again, this is evidence that people make the registry cruel and unjust.

  3. ML

i wonder if there has been a single instance of a crime by a RC in the circumstances that the Virginia is designed to prevent. The Halloween hysteria was fueled by not one single documented case of a Halloween assault by an RC. Unreal.

  4. TS

VA is using the idea that the person needs to be aware of the law(s) and not ignorant of it based upon SCOTUS ruling saying the person has to be aware of the law (even though LEO/A don’t when they try to enforce them unknowingly). This is the caveat all legislatures use.
