Given actual recidivism rates, I would argue that nearly the entire registry is “low risk.” And the registry does absolutely nothing to protect anyone from the remaining handful.

I personally think that nobody can predict risk, low or high. Unless you have a crystal ball, there is no way to predict risk. There are so many new offenses by someone who has never offended. That person obviously would have beefed deemed low risk. Yet a PFR who is wheelchair bound would be considered high risk. There is no rhyme or reason. Why else do cops re-act to crime but are not really able to prevent it.

Risks listed on the sex offense registry is just as useless as using an article from Psychology Today as proof that registrants re-offense rates are frightening and high as high as 80%.

Humans believe we control anything look at river dams, a river doesn’t give a dam about a dam; humans can’t control behavior based on the past alone because junk science can’t predict intent, humans can’t predict the weather and humans can’t predict someone on a list is dangerous based on risk. If you aren’t hitched to someone’s hip you don’t know jack.

In the last 15 to 20 years, no legislator in Massachusetts has even entertained the ideal of releasing level 1 information to the public. They literally just given up due to a slew of court decisions and a one party state that has sealed that protection for level 1’s. I seriously doubt there will be any change in my lifetime.

The NY registry is a joke. I haven’t lived in the US for over a decade and I’m still considered a moderate risk for the rest of my life at a level 2. Luckily I don’t show up in any Google searches or on the Fed site anymore other than my name.
