  • Knouse alleged Sabatini pressured her into a relationship and fostered a hostile workplace, while Sabatini maintained their relationship was consensual
  • Sabatini’s attorney celebrated the verdict as “a moment of sweet justice,” while Knouse’s attorney called it “disappointing” and said she plans to appeal

A former Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) scientist who lost his job following allegations of sexual misconduct by a female colleague has been awarded $6 million in damages in a defamation lawsuit against her.

David Sabatini, a prominent biologist, was awarded the damages by a Suffolk County jury on Friday, Oct. 16, following a years-long legal battle with fellow scientist Kristin Knouse, according to The Boston Globe.

The legal dispute began after Knouse alleged that Sabatini had used his professional influence to pressure her into a relationship starting in 2018 when they were both working at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, which is affiliated with MIT.

She alleged that Sabatini, who ran a lab at the institute at the time, had cultivated a sexualized, hostile environment in his laboratory, per the Globe.

A 2021 internal investigation found that Sabatini had violated the institute’s policy governing workplace relationships after becoming romantically involved with Knouse, who was then a Whitehead fellow, according to the outlet.

However, Sabatini, now 58, maintained that their sexual relationship was consensual and said it ended after he began pursuing another woman.

Following the investigation, Sabatini was removed from his position at …

It sounds like the accuser in this case instigated the relationship in the first place, and apparently participated enthusiastically in the relationship until he ended it. If so, I don’t see how it can be said that he abused his position.

Ethically, he should have rejected her early advances for the very reason this case illustrates. A consensual relationship shouldn’t be so easily reclassified as abusive simply because of a broken heart.

The New York Post ran the same story. Their comments section, surprisingly, are filled only with opinions supporting the verdict. Leaves me hopeful that there may come a day when the practice of “all sex abuse allegations must be believed above all else” may work its way out of the courtroom.

I find it more interesting that 7 women found his story more credible than hers. Her own gender did not believe her. Says something. If they appeal, they’ll appeal the money amount, to get it shrunk.
