Turning Teens who Have Sex into “Sex Offenders” — The Story Continues

The front page of today’s New York Times features the case against Zach Anderson, a case you read about here three weeks ago. Zach is the 19 year old who met a young woman, 17, on “Hot or Not,” had sex with her once and now sits in jail. When he gets out next week he will spend the rest of his life on the Sex Offender Registry, and the next five years forbidden to go online. Full Article

The summary of this story gives the impression the girl is actually 17, which, of course, isn’t true. She was 14. I’m not saying this is fair or that he should be a sex offender or on any registry, but we don’t want to come off as misleading.

I concur. 19 & 14? Big difference. How did they meet? I’m thinking he should have known better. In today’s world, people should know better

You know I should have known better, and if I had listened to that, I wouldn’t be here now. Many people in jail should have known better. In fact, if this was my daughter, I would have told her, she should have known better. Yet, the guy didn’t jump out of the bushes and force himself on her, or held her at knife point or beat her up. How come this guy is treated like those who do these things, and gets the same life time shaming sentence that supposedly was meant for those who do these things?

Well, I’m not really sure how to respond to NPS. First, everyone is entitled to their opinion. Your response was both very defensive and it sounds like you have difficulty with others views. As we are all aware, one of the reasons this site exists is to alter the views that so many have regarding registered citizens. As such, we are all aware everyone has a different perspective. It’s certainly true that there are a lot of 14 year olds who look and act much older than they are. Although, the law the the law. I would imagine most 19 year olds in today’s world are aware of the laws as well. So, I find difficulty in thinking that they just jumped into bed with one another. In summary, I would also imagine this wasn’t just a one time thing. That’s my opinion. My other opinion is that you must believe that having intimate relations with an underage girl is appropriate. The law is the law! Now, without knowing the full details, I don’t think it’s appropriate for the young man to register for life, unless there are dire circumstances none of us are aware of. Was this his first time? Does he have a history of doing this? In conclusion, all cases aren’t the same and that’s my opinion. Thank you!

NPS said “All of these senate bills that are going before the public safety committee will not affect me one iota…”

Including Prop35/SB 448?

Excellent post timmer.
Yet, the guy didn’t jump out of the bushes and force himself on her, or held her at knife point or beat her up. How come this guy is treated like those who do these things, and gets the same life time shaming sentence that supposedly was meant for those who do these things?
That’s exactly the point that needs to change there needs to be some difference to these acts. Although still illegal in our country there is a huge difference between the type if offenses but we are all treated as if we were stalking and praying in children by means of force or coercion which simply isn’t true.

Well, I’m not sure what to say. You can certainly realize someone’s educational level by reading their responses. If you don’t agree with their views, they thrash you and state your narrow minded and have no basis. Yet, they provide input regarding its not like the guy jumped out of the bushes? NPS becomes both angry and hateful if someone disagrees with him? He dislikes! Maybe this is the reason why he is on the registry. Perhaps he has a control issue? Or, maybe people shouldn’t provide conflicting viewpoints because his views are always correct? My opinion is that anyone with any intellectual capital would be open to others opinions even if they agree or disagree. I respectfully disagree with your opinions and I believe and feel you think it’s okay to have sexual relations with a 14 year old. Blame it on the girl/dress was too short/too much make up! It’s all her fault! Or, maybe it was consensual? Maybe he was drunk? The bottom line is that ALL of us don’t know the facts, but we are entitled to our opinion. NPS, you have control issues and I suggest you get counseling!

USA says, “Well, I’m not sure what to say”

Then maybe you shouldn’t say anything. Perhaps you should refrain from speaking about what you know nothing about. You make lots of assumptions about me; none of which are rooted in any kind of fact and quite honestly, I don’t have to justify myself to you. It sounds like you’re the one who is angry and it is you who doesn’t like when people disagree with you. You certainly have a lot of negatives by your posts. I think most folks on this board know you are F.O.S. Know when to quit because I’m done with you. You’re just not worth my responding to.

But if you’re in the Bay Area, please do come to Berkeley because I will be there. And I GUARANTEE if/when you meet me, you will be floored, and you will find yourself to be a fool.

I won’t hold my breath for an apology.

Your right, I’m blown away by your wanting to judge others, but yet you are quick to respond when others judge you. I would imagine your probably educated, gay, single, a perfectionist and have a superiority complex. I also imagine you where convicted of a child related offense. You scare me
