A bill that supporters say will get tough on human trafficking and expand who has to register as a sex offender in the state took another step forward Saturday when the House chamber passed it unanimously.
There was no debate on the bill on the House floor and it passed 66-0.
HB 237 expands the definition of human trafficking to include “harboring, maintaining, patronizing and providing” people for such purposes. It also raises the age definition of “child” from 16 to 18 in cases of forced sex work. It removes the statute of limitations for human trafficking for prosecution. It includes it as a crime that can constitute racketeering.
The bill increases the penalty to a second degree felony and classifies it as a crime a court can judge as a serious violent offense. That would reduce the amount of good time an offender can receive.
The bill would expand those who have to register as a sex offender in New Mexico. If someone has been sanctioned for a sex offense in another jurisdiction or had to register as a sex offender in another state, that person would be required to register as a sex offender in New Mexico. That would be the case even if the person spends only nominal time here. New York City financier Jeffrey Epstein maintained a second home in New Mexico and, though he was a registered sex offender in Florida, he did not have to register as such in New Mexico.
Anytime there’s an expansion on the Registry it’s all bad.
No debate on the house floor, means no discussion at all. That is not a healthy democracy. That means every member is intimidated and afraid to even have a dialogue. How could you pass anything without having some type of discussion. The US house even discusses terrorist laws and illegal immigration. How could they have no discussion?
This mount to nothing, and registry is nothing more than putting those in shame for what they’ve done after they paid their debts, let them go.
We need to reframe our definition of what constitutes being a US citizen. Ladies and gentlemen we are deceiving ourselves if we believe we are at this point even citizens! We are better defined as enemies of the state. We have the responsibility of paying taxes without the rights of represnetation. We are targets to harm! If and when we are represented it’s like having a one legged guy running for us in a two legged foot race! Our own gov’t is at war with us and the people that represent us are part of the problem. Did the North in the Civil War tax the South while in war with the South? We must pay taxes and pay tribute to our punishers or we’ll under color of law be harmed even more. What we need to do is to Organize and Mobilize! These Bully law will ONLY get worst if we don’t. A bully is handled 3 was…1. You hind from him. 2. you try to apease him. 3. lastly you stand and FIGHT him! We’ve tried the first two and only encourages them to continue harm against us. Our numbers have grown enough to harness from the public registry recruits to join our fight. what are we waiting for? I have my talents to haress you can do the same. Even if its giving up your coffee and sending fund in to this cause. Join us. Show up, Stand up, Speak up!
The bill also contains a provision adding to the definition of a sex offender anyone who owns residential property in New Mexico. The bill’s self-righteous sponsors were on television talking about how the state could not allow another billionaire pedophile to get away without registering. The irony is that Jeffrey Epstein’s name was not on the title to his ranch. He leased it from a holding company–which he probably owned or was a principal of. So he would not fall under the literal definition.
It passed the house unanimously? Shocking. 😑
Easiest way for a lawmaker to climb the political ladder and make a name for himself: on the backs of registrants. Same old story.
Racketeering!? sounds a lot !ike the concept of sex offender registration.
🗽 More power to you, MN and all other dumb-ass States! Just keep piling on to your Registries so, by the time SCOTUS takes up the issue, there will be absolutely no other way to see them but as pure, total, 100% PUNISHMENT. So, yeah, you idiot lawmakers, just keep at it. 😠
