An elderly sex offender from Marathon was removed from the Iowa Sex-Offender Registry on Tuesday so he can eventually end up in a nursing home, a development that “outraged” a former state senator whose last major proposal was to establish a geriatric sex-offender unit in Algona.
Buena Vista County District Court Judge David Lester ruled on Tuesday Edward _____, 83, satisfied the state’s requirements to be removed from the registry. He’s been out of prison for more than five years; a Department of Corrections director in Sioux City signed off on the removal; and a DOC-approved analysis showed _____is less than 2% likely to commit sex crimes again.
…
Lock’s attorney, Phil Mears of Iowa City, told The Storm Lake Times the reason his client sought removal was because of declining health. After a recent hospitalization, an area rehab clinic wouldn’t allow him to set foot on the premises because he was on the sex-offender registry. Mears added that at some point _____is will need nursing home care. Nursing homes are allowed to deny residential placement based on sex-offender status alone in Iowa.
“Imagine if someone has been discharged from prison and needs round-the-clock care,” Mears said in an interview on Wednesday. “What do we do? Drop them off at Salvation Army at 5 p.m. on a Friday afternoon?”
…
“Lock couldn’t be placed in Oakdale because he didn’t qualify,” Allen said. “Ten to 20 years down the road there are going to be a lot more people who can’t live in a nursing home because they’re a sex offender and can’t live in a state facility because there isn’t any room.”
And they say the registry isn’t about punishment or retribution.
I definitely fear this issue as I get older and my health issues get worse. Our only hope is that there is a way off the registry. But the CA tiered system has a long way to go before that will be possible for most of us due to CP being on tier 3.
No one is that afraid of A dieing 83 year old man this is proof that IML is nothing but harassment and lifetime punishment.
No wonder sex offenders are scared hideing in their lilittle hole’s only comeing out for food and supplies they need to survive.
I gotta admit when the Department of Justice and the politicians designed these laws they did a really good job at making sure sex offenders were banished from Society they literally created a virtual jail cell
Good luck
I’d bet my left arm that the story the former state senator told was grossly exaggerated, if not completely made up. Even if not, the entire registry population shouldn’t be made to suffer because of the actions of one.
“Buena Vista County District Court Judge David Lester ruled on Tuesday Edward Lock, 83, satisfied the state’s requirements to be removed from the registry.” End of story… except because of whiners.
Also why will “A parole officer will still monitor Lock on a routine basis…”?
Add this to my list of public registry fears: Being old with dementia, unable to care for myself and my kids having to house me in one of their homes and their address is on the effing registry. That lights a fire under my butt to GTFO of this country.
At 86, my dad has advanced dementia and, out of 5 siblings, I’m the only one living close enough and concerned enough to see to his care, manage his affairs and spend meaningful time with him. Thankfully he has enough funds to pay for 24-hour live-in care, but I don’t know that I will.
Being a decrepit, diaper-wearing octogenarian who barely remembers his own name is burden enough on a family. Add registered sex offender to the mix and the weight of that burden goes up by an order of magnitude. F!
Just wait. Some legislator will propose a separate area in cemeteries for sex offenders. At least 1000 ft from any child buried.
I wonder what future generations will think of those living now and how well be judged worse than the evil of the 20th century. Happens when a society has no morals.
Never have I heard about a guy in a wheelchair scoping out children to take for their sick games.
Yeah so the whole thing is just a repeat of “unintended consequences”. The kind that take lifetimes to see but to the legislature and DoJ it’s ok because they get paid in the mean time while YOU have to figure out how roll with their legal mambo and not get hit with covid19 as well.
