A former Greensburg man living in North Carolina was ordered Wednesday to serve up to nine years in prison failing to register as a convicted sex offender.
Ozzy James ____, 37, pleaded guilty to one felony charge that requires convicted sex offenders to register current addresses and provide their photographs to police.
9-23 months for the original misdemeanor crime, 2-4 years for the first failure to register, then 9 years for the second. Business as usual.
Doesn’t there have to be some sort of rationale behind sentencing. When the laws and their sentences are frist passed isn’t there some kind of standard that needs to be followed. I mean there is nothing logical or reason based behind this. 9 years in prison can make a person completely institutionalized. I could see 30 days in jail. But even that could make you lose your job, apartment, car and everything else. Why can’t this be challenged as excessive?
How is this not punishment? 9 years for failing to tell the government every aspect of your life when they can get off their arse to find out themselves.
Wake up courts it’s punishment
A sexually violent predator for a misdemeanor????? Sounds like something only California could come up with.
“As part of the plea bargain, prosecutors dropped a more serious felony charge of aggravated indecent assault of a child.” Aside from more prison time what is really the difference between a more or less serious charge really? The real punishment is the civil obligation that supposedly isn’t punishment which comes after prison when you are forced to register. If there were a choice, I think many would choose the longer prison term over being on the registry forever afterwards. The registry is worse in many ways.
Interesting! According to the article, he plead to 1 count of misdemeanor assault years ago and did prison time? Furthermore, he was deemed a sexually violent offender? That doesn’t make sense. I’m going to guess he has more then 1 criminal conviction? This is his 2nd conviction for failing to register FYI! Deeming him a sexually violent offender after 1 misdemeanor conviction again doesn’t make sense? I’m guessing this info written within the article is incorrect!
So they dude played video games with a minor and she told daddy that the dude touched her. Even if he did why would it carry a lifetime membership for a misdemeanor. Everything about the registry isn’t based on logic or no where near reality; which is why it needs to be abolished. These sentences are extremely harsh no matter how many priors the dude has.
On the other hand..this guy is incredibly stupid for violating a second time. Perhaps there were some extenuating circumstances of which we are all unaware that may excuse his failure to comply. But if not, then this guy just may be too dumb to survive, or he has a death wish.
And of course, I recognize that the registry is, in and of itself, an obscenity and needs to be abolished. But still, in the meantime, we must all do what we have to do in order to survive this b.s
Wait, registration is just like a Price Club Membership, so why is he facing prison? All he needs to do is renew his Price Club Membership, or worse case scenario be banned from buying at that store if he does not want renew it.
