COLUMBUS, Ohio — A newly-signed law will stop convicted child sex offenders in Ohio from working or volunteering with kids.
Convicted sex offenders in the state have always been able to work around children legally, much to the chagrin of parents like Rebecca Surendorff and others who realize nothing can be done.
“This is, frankly, a crisis level, and we’re not giving it the thought and attention that it deserves,” Surendorff said.
The law has not prevented it — until now.
So if my interpretation of the law is right assuming child porn possession is a tier one offense in Ohio, this is a joke.
I wonder when someone is going to confront the issue with the obsession of protecting children because it seems like it’s manipulation. Do we really need draconian registry laws to protect children instead of putting in work of helping families and guardians to protect children? The registry has torn many lives apart.
“Crisis Level” and yet can’t name a single child harmed by not having this law in place. Meanwhile, this week alone a child was killed by a neighbor’s dog, nearly a dozen children in three separate families were gunned down in separate incidents, and a six year old shot his teacher intentionally. All crimes well within purview of governments, all virtually unheard of in other countries.
I’ve mixed feelings about this whole mess. On the one hand, I don’t understand why any registrant would choose to work at any kind of business that primarily targets children/families, given how much drama they’ll encounter when someone inevitably discovers their status. On the other hand, most registrants don’t have many options for employment, and must take whatever they can get. That being said, while there are individuals who may be genuinely dangerous to minors, I believe that the vast majority of those on the registry do not present any danger to minors (or anyone else, for that matter), whatsoever, and should be able to work at a haunted house/anywhere else without incident.
If I remember correctly, it was the Ohio DA or a prosecutor who advocated for a law like this many months before (about 6) the halloween incident occurred where a girl found out she was working with two registrants. Something smells fishy, at least to me, that this DA or prosecutor wanted a law like this and BAM!……..months later a girl finds out she’s around registrants and it’s all over the news in Ohio. Is there a correlation?? It wouldn’t surprise me at all if there was and this whole thing was setup from the beginning.
There are some sick and twisted people in this world and no matter how many laws they create they can never predict when someone is going to possibly offend or reoffend BUT the registry isn’t about stopping a crime before it occurs, The registry was solely created to punish people for committing sex crimes in a way that would scare other people from committing sex crimes, by labeling people “SexOffenders” and banishing them from society.
Any one placed on the registry for whatever reason and takes a job that requires you to be around kids is just asking for trouble.
This makes sense to me. What is the issue. Sure the law is a general one, but then what law isn’t. This to me has nothing to do with the registry and everything to do with particular crimes against minors. Who here would want repeat child offenders interacting with their children. Not me.
(Crisis Level) lol , when ? and who says ? Where’s the proof ? sounds to me like a bunch of dirty minded gov’t types have a hand in this , proof the registries are for the goof ball circus spectators and haters . Middle finger peace sign to them
I’m close to %97 not caring about anybody anywhere since only %3 care about me. So keep your emotions and energy to survive, live as well as you can, and remember they do not care at all about you.
