PLAINWELL, Mich. (WOOD) — A registered sex offender in Allegan County said he could not stay silent about the strangers who showed up at his home early Sunday morning.
“I thought, ‘You know what? I’m gonna reach out to you guys because … if I don’t do something, (what if) somebody else loses their life because I didn’t take action?’ the husband and father told Target 8 Monday.
He wasn’t willing to risk it.
“The other sex offenders that live in the area that don’t know (about what happened) could get attacked,” he explained.
The alleged incident occurred around 12 a.m. Sunday, when the man said he and his wife heard commotion outside their garage.
“I heard the rattle of the garage door and then the banging, and thought, ‘What in the world’s going on here?’ So, then I opened up the garage door… and there were all the kids standing side by side of each other.”
A neighbor’s Ring doorbell camera captured glimpses of what appeared to be five or six young people wearing hooded sweatshirts.
“They started asking me about my personal background, and they asked me what my first name was,” he recalled, noting that one member of the group was recording the interaction on a cell phone.
The man, who’s in his 50’s, said he told the kids his name.
“I was trying to be open and be honest,” he explained. “I did tell them the truth, but they kept going on and on about, ‘Well, you still did this. You still did that.’”
According to the Michigan Sex Offender Registry, the crime that put him on the registry occurred more than thirty years ago in another state.

“One of them stated that the people on the registry need to be dead,” he recalled. “That’s when my wife said, ‘enough’ and she told me that I needed to come in.”
He said it was at that point that one of the visitors struck him in the head.
