In this week’s print edition of New Times, you’ll find a feature story on the warring opinions over Florida’s sex offender registry. It’s also not the only piece of journalism around town this week diving into the issue.
Over the last three days the Sun-Sentinel has dropped a large-scale investigation into the state’s Jimmy Ryce law, a safeguard designed to keep the state’s worst sex offenders locked up after their prison time. Even though the investigation’s data-mining turned up some troubling trends, the series was a textbook knee-jerk sex offender story: the data took a backseat to a parade of horror stories, painting a slightly intellectually dishonest picture of the situation. Having my original incident that landed me on the RSO list I can tell you that Florida is a pathetically run mess. I was harassed so much that I was zoned out of any possible place to actually live. Florida simply tortures people and it is shame that this sort of abuse of basic human rights can exist in the USA.
I can tell you that I have nothing but bad memories of Florida and I am thankful that I was able to escape but I am very sad about those who could not and are still being abused by the system there.
I read sympathy for the devil and tried leaving a comment regarding people leaving comments regarding murdering sex offenders and how the sex offender label included misdomeanor offenders in many states that are required to register often on a public registry that places them as tier two offenders for up to 25 years. What I found funny was the fact I got censored and couldn’t post my comment but the death and murder threat people could. Yep something is seriously wrong with that paper and some people in Florida that call for murdering misdomeanor sex offenders.
