UPDATED with Opinion: Make sex-offender rules uniform
There are more than 4,500 people on Delaware’s sex offender registry – about 1 for every 200 citizens in the state.
In most of Delaware, sex offenders are not permitted to live within 500 feet of a school. But eight towns have written rules expanding that zone five or sixfold, effectively banning sex offenders from their borders. Full Article
1. The article mentions only residency restrictions; it says nothing about visiting one of their parks all day, every day. But, in their minds, residency restrictions solve “the problem”.
2. The news headline just below this article (on the Delaware News website) is about a mother who beheaded her three-month old baby. But at least a sex offender residency restriction will keep the children safe! *sarcasm intended*
Re Opinion: I have no doubt this is a case of be-careful-what-you-wish-for, but if we are going to have all these RSO laws, it would be convenient to have overriding national laws to preclude the myriad state, county, city, and other local laws. Additionally, such a move would force a more serious conversation about categories of offenders, teirs, civil & Constitutional rights, etc. As Florida’s example shows, at present, it continues to be a race for NIMBY & for who can be harshest on RSOs.
Wow, fear drives the “crazy” out of people! Wish the registry was only for the law enforcement eyes and not the whole public. The public has too much time on their hands to come up with more garbage rules/laws/ordinances. It’s a shame that we are not a nation to forgive and find peace!
1 for every 200 citizens? That includes every man, woman and child.

Using those calculations and the (conservative) assumption that DE RSOs are 95% adult male, my mathematical efforts come out to
1 out of every 79 adult males in the State of Delaware is a RSO !
WOW!
