New European ETIAS security system

The European Commission created the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) that travelers will need to apply to for each European country they visit. It may start in late 2006, but the date keeps getting pushed back.

It is being created due to abuses of the free travel between Schengen nations by foreigners.

ETIAS approval is not like a formal full-blown VISA, but sort of a light version.

Travellers will have to complete an online application, which should be quick and should not require any documentation beyond a travel document (a passport or other equivalent document).

It may or may not take criminal convictions into account.

Click here to check the current status of ETIAS. The latest we know is that it might be active at the end of 2006.
