UT: No more online mug shots, SL County sheriff says

SOUTH SALT LAKE — Using words such as “bullies,” “extortionists” and “trash,” Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder on Thursday blasted tabloid magazines and websites that post mug shots from his jail and then demand money for the pictures to be removed. “In my opinion, what we’re seeing today is nothing short of extortion in our county,” Winder said. “This practice must be stopped.”

Good for him. He is a rare example of a law enforcement person who uses common sense and logic and is willing to actually take action on these exploitative sites who have clearly been operating illegally. Well done sir.

Most of the people who abuse the use of public records are in fact breaking laws. This helps remove the temptation of others doing the same. That is NOT what the registry was for, or the public awareness of mugshots and crime descriptions for. The were a matter of public safety, but it has long since proven to be far worse than good.
