Lawmakers on Tuesday held off on deciding whether the state sex offender registry is good enough to allow offenders’ addresses to be posted online.
State law says an audit of the error-ridden registry must be “favorable” before the state can post home addresses of sex offenders on the Internet sex offender registry.
After a 2010 audit found major problems, State Auditor Doug Hoffer last week released a new audit report that found persistent problems, though there were fewer issues than in the previous audit. Wonder if this can be applied in California? Oh wait, it’s not supposed to be punishment but administrative. If that’s the case, why hasn’t a registry containing all the convicted drunk drivers, drug dealers, gang members, etc. been developed? I live in fear of these usually repeat offenders more than I do a sex offender.

I personally praise Vermont for making the right decision. Truly. I mean, do you initially recall when the online registry was posted for all to see? Initially, you had to go down to the police station to view registrants. THen, they posted the names, addresses, photos and convictions of those on the registry. I can’t even imagine how anyone would feel with this? Then, online websites for profit began sprouting up and rubbing it in even further? Then, to take it one step further, sex offenders where given limitations on where they could live, work, visit (beaches/libraries/tennis courts/parks). From my… Read more »
