Employment Opportunity – Sex Offense Litigation and Policy Fellow at Mitchell Hamline School of Law

The Sex Offense Litigation and Policy Resource Center seeks applications for a full-time fellowship position. This is a two-year, full-time position, working directly with the director of the Center. We seek a person with superior research, writing and organizational skills, with a demonstrated interest in impact litigation, particularly involving sex offense policy, who can take charge of developing resources and initiatives supporting this litigation and related policy changes. We will accept applications until the positon is filled, but prefer applications prior to January 31, 2018. While start date is flexible, we seek a person who can begin work in the early spring of 2018, but no later than July 1, 2018.

The Center: The Sex Offense Litigation and Policy Resource Center was founded in early 2017 with funding from the Vital Projects Fund. Located at Mitchell Hamline School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota, it is directed by Prof. Eric S. Janus. The Mission Statement of the Center: “The Sex Offense Litigation and Policy Resource Center at Mitchell Hamline School of Law collects and disseminates information about cases on issues of sexual violence policy, and facilitates communication, sharing, and the development of strategies among the lawyers, advocates and academics who seek a more sensible and effective public policy on sexual violence prevention.” The Center’s focus is on post-conviction “regulatory” laws affecting individuals who have been convicted of sex-related offenses in the past and who have served their duly imposed criminal sentences. These laws include registration and notification laws, residency and internet restrictions, and so-called civil commitment laws.

The position: The fellowship is a full-time, two-year, non-tenure-track position. A central responsibility of the fellow will be to develop sophisticated resource materials to support and expand impact litigation regarding sex offense laws. It is contemplated that these materials will be disseminated director of the Center. The Center has funding for technical support in the design and maintenance of the through several media, including a website, in part available to the public and the media, and in part available only to litigators and others involved in challenging these laws in impact litigation. The Fellow will work with and under the direction of the director of the center. The central objective of the position is to develop materials that provide value for litigators. The work will include monitoring and tracking proposed and existing litigation, collecting pleadings and briefs and decisions, curating the website, and developing materials that summarize, analyze, and identify the significance of this litigation, and support and facilitate ongoing litigation and associated policy work. The Fellow will develop network connections with lawyers and other experts and participate in planning and implementing periodic conferences and strategy development meetings. In conjunction with the Director, the fellow will engage in other organizing and advocacy activity. The fellow will be expected to be in residence at Mitchell Hamline in St. Paul, but applications will be considered from exceptional candidates who cannot relocate to Minnesota.

Qualifications and applications: JD degree and admission to the bar, at least one year of post-JD legal work. Superior academic record, self-directed, strong initiative, strong organizational skills. Organizing and advocacy skills and experience are desirable. Demonstrated interest in public interest law.     Don’t know many sex offenders who are allowed to belong to the Bar most states disallow membership based on moral grounds.

    This is wonderful news! I hadn’t realized that they were going full-in on the cause of sex offender justice. This is just what we need to be seeing.

      +1, and Hamline/Wm. Mitchell turns out some pretty decent attorneys, such as one-time Chief Justice Warren Burger (for whom their law library is named).

      This is a *very* good thing for our cause.

    Why aint this quaint, they have an entire faculty set up to do exactly what AJ, CHRIS, NEW PERSON and myself have already done. I wonder, is our work considered intellectual property?

      Mike, if they can benefit from your, and others’, work then that is its own reward. Having dedicated resources specifically to address the sex offender juggernaut established by law schools is precisely what we need. I believe that there will be more and that an ad-hoc network of those fighting this injustice, through shared information and resources, is essential.
