AK: Anchorage man who attacked sex offenders sentenced to 23 years in prison

At an Anchorage Superior Court hearing for Jason Vukovich, who was sentenced Monday for attacking three registered sex offenders, his older brother Joel Fulton said that despite counseling, he has not yet recovered from what the two men experienced as children. …

But the prosecutor, Patrick McKay, argued that there was no excuse for Vukovich to target and attack three strangers, beating one man so badly with a hammer that he fractured his skull and knocked him unconscious.

“We’re lucky we’re not dealing with a murder charge,” Assistant District Attorney Patrick McKay told the judge. “People do not get to take the law into their own hands just because they don’t like a particular group of people or a particular person.” Full Article

  1. It doesn’t work

The ADA called us “a particular group of people.” Oops.

“The purpose of the registry was to keep the community safe.”

I think he meant to say: the purpose of the registry was to keep NON REGISTRANTS safe.

    • Facts should matter

What the registry tries to prevent is not possible.. they will never realize their goals of “saving one life.”

The legislative intent of Megan’s Law is a pipe dream to begin with.

      • David Kennerly

Megan’s Law or International Megan’s Law, for that matter, show the dangers of a fully-realized direct democracy. It is truly a tyranny of the majority.

I don’t know what you mean by direct democracy, but Megan’s Law is the product of the system we have now, which is generally referred to as a representative democracy. I call it a lobbyist’s democracy. The hysteria has been the result of the manipulation of the many by the few.

  3. Dustin

Odd number of years. Didn’t see anything breaking his sentence down, the maximums for each charge, or how his priors affect it.

  4. AJ

“People do not get to take the law into their own hands just because they don’t like a particular group of people or a particular person.”
Not to mention, the legislature doesn’t like or tolerate competition…
    @Dustin, et al:
The headline appears to be a typo, as the article itself states, “25 years in prison, five years fewer than the maximum. He also sentenced Vukovich to five years’ probation.”

  5. Eric

This is a classic example of the dangers of the registry. these disturbed individuals viewing the registry to target people they know nothing about.
