MADISON (WKOW) — A Cottage Grove man Monday admitted to setting fire to the future home of a sex offender, and was convicted of felony arson.
51-year old Russell Speigle will be sentenced next month. The crime carries a maximum sentence of forty years. But a plea agreement between Speigle and the Dane County district attorney’s office involves prosecutors asking for no more than one year in jail for Speigle. Full Article

WI: Man arrested on suspicion of burning house intended for sex offender
I wonder how this genius would have felt had the fire spread to other houses and killed a child? Idiot.
Very disturbing article. This should be considered a hate crime. Furthermore, the man should be required to register as an arsonist. We have had people attacked/killed/threatened/hurt and on a few occasions, family members and even neighbors have been mistakenly attacked. People need to realize that these websites create hysteria and anger. People don’t realize that many times, people are put on the registry for minor offenses or committed the offenses long ago.
Why is this not being treated as domestic terrorism, attempted murder and why the heck would they offer him probation and only a year in jail?
Even if he’s made to register as an arsonist, it doesn’t carry the same kind of penalties for failure to register as it would any registrant who registers as a sex offender.
I keep telling people that murder in California carries 5-10 years on average. It’s true. I read it in the news seemingly every day. There is no registry for murderers.
This just shows the kind of justice we can expect from the Government, and the need to start our own towns.
This same Dane County prosecutor’s office has sent individuals to prison for 3 years for a non-violent no contact offense of viewing underage porn. But when someone burns down a house endangering neighbors and occupants that may have resided there…..the DA accepts a deal of 1 year or less
looks to me that if this sort of thing is aloud to go on , well you know , things are going to kick something much bigger off , witch hunters don’t always win , but it seems that by even trying to protect your self , you will end up with much more time than this guy got , the unjust law for the SOR makes me sick ,
The prosecutors responsible for the plea deal should be disbarred for failure to request a sentence appropriate for the crime, failure to recuse themselves from the proceedings due to prejudicial involvement, and a complete lack of professionalism. The victim, should employ an aggressive attorney to ensure that this miscarriage of justice doesn’t come without a price and sue the socks off this worthless arsonist/terrorist. Will keep a close eye on the sentence actually imposed by the judge to see if more people from the court system in that county should be relieved of duty.
The truly twisted part of this story is the felon/arsonist; as are most vigilantes; is so narcissistic and smug that he thinks he is some form of hero. A true clinical socio/psychopath. This narcissist/arsonist needs a minimum of one year in a psychiatric institution.
I still cant beleave this guy got out on a signature bond , its like telling us we have had it , and hell no you cant get out of the wash up usa , in the mean time we are going to keep wiping you , and we hope you don’t like it , some of us are screwed , we need to start a town of our own , I looked up a few , and seen a few when I was out riding here in Cali , down by Neland ,
Sad to hear.
Another piece of evidence that registration is detrimental to one’s mortal health.
I don’t understand why this isn’t classified as a hate crime since the government made registrants into another class. or is it that we’re second class citizens?
These people are so biblical and righteous, how about an eye for an eye approach. They start feeling the affect of their actions, maybe they think twice.
