“When you have a pedophile leading pedophiles, it puts a really bad taste in your mouth,” Walterboro resident Kevin Lyles said.
This is a common concern among Walterboro residents that live near Barracada Road.
The executive director of Shield Ministries, David Truluck, is a registered sex offender planning to open a third treatment center and halfway house there.
We took the resident’s concerns to Dr. William Burke, a doctor who treats sex offenders in the Shield Ministries program.
Dr. Burke has performed around 10,000 evaluations on sex offenders, including David Truluck himself.
“I know Mr. Truluck fairly well because I evaluated him pretrial. He was in treatment with our program for about a year and a half before he pled guilty. He then was in our treatment program for five years after that,” Dr. Burke said.
Dr. Burke says he wouldn’t work with someone who would re-offend, so Truluck agreed to the polygraph and has been polygraphed over 25 times.
“Some people can never change, you know, but I think there are individuals who can change, and again, I wouldn’t be doing the work if I didn’t believe that to be true,” Dr. Burke said.
Dr. Burke uses polygraph testing and the PPG to help determine recidivism risk for people convicted of sex crimes.
“It’s been proven time and time again to be the single greatest predictor of recidivism with child molesters. Now, this is not supposed to be used for guilt or innocence. Okay. This is supposed to be utilized for the level of risk,” Dr. Burke said.
Sick, sick sick. Polygraphs and PPGs shouldn’t be used on anyone. We need either judicial intervention, or … revolution.

Sorry to say but polygraphs are a joke and totally unreliable.
I took several of them and passed but a few questions came up here and there as “inconclusive”.
A few times I got an “inconclusive” but the group leader took that as a “fail” which then caused me to have to come to group 2 times a week instead of once and of course I had to pay the $40 for the second time each week as well as the first $40. Their thought was that if you get a inconclusive result there must be something that is triggering this. Good Lord!! The torture I went through knowing I did absolutely nothing wrong but treated again like a criminal. Even my PO made sure he made my life impossible even more than before because of an inconclusive. I had to attend group two instead of time a week and pay for that extra meeting and then exposed to more and more poly tests for absolutely no reason. The bashing I received in group from the groupleader because of the inconclusive was horrible. It gets to the point where you have to admit to something you did not do in order to just shut that group leader up. And the group leaders were not even certified therapists. Urgh!!
