Officials kick off a 258-bed expansion of Virginia’s sex offender treatment center Monday, but caution it could run out of room again not long after completion.
The Virginia Center for Behavioral Rehabilitation holds and treats sex offenders after their prison terms have ended if they are deemed by courts to be “sexually violent predators” who remain too dangerous to be released. Full Article
So the 258 people they will hold there are so dangerous, the government needs to spend $110,000,000 just to build a facility to hold them, and then who knows how much more keeping them there?
I wonder if Germany had similar headlines when the concentration camps opened.
$426,000+ per bed. And exactly how much money is going to research on recidivism rates? $110 million to lock people up and no money to research recidivism rates or to develop scientifically-verified risk assessment tools (instead the snake oil of the Static-99 and SARATSO). Clearly, the intent is simply to lock up more people under civil commitment rather than focus on accurate risk assessment tools, effective treatment, and appropriately supervised release.
Please understand that the existing facility is full. Study recidivism? Nope. They don’t. Back in 2012 they wanted to try this as a private facility run by GEO. That didn’t happen, which is a good thing.
Virginia always believes that crimes are so underreported that they manufacture a recidivism rate far higher to justify their actions.
Snake oil is EXACTLY what the Static-99R is.
