A man facing 90 years in prison for sex crimes is set to renounce his United States citizenship.
Two weeks ago, Dwayne _____ appeared in the Superior Court of Guam to be sentenced for criminal sexual conduct charges. However, at the Feb. 14 hearing, Judge John Terlaje learned there were discussions on the possibility of Dwayne being deported.
Assistant Attorney General Christine Tenorio further explained during that hearing that Dwayne , a dual citizen, would need to renounce his United States citizenship for him to be deported, leading Terlaje to reschedule the sentencing to allow De Guzman and his family to discuss the decision.
On Thursday morning, Dwayne ‘s mother explained to Terlaje their family would prefer having the sentence handed down before deciding whether De Guzman would renounce his citizenship.
“I understand where you’re coming from, I appreciate that, but I don’t know how to do a sentencing and then have that caveat in it,” Terlaje said in response before adding that the minimum time De Guzman faces is five years, however, that could be reduced further to zero.
Where do I sign up for this action! I’ll renounce in a heartbeat. For what I pay monthly in Bay area I could live for over a yr in the provinces.
Can’t imagine Prisons in Guam are any better than ones here. Also, considering the nature of the charges, that could make things worse for him.
All things considered, I’m not sure that if I had had the option to avoid all this and relocate out of the US, I wouldn’t have taken it. I got no prison time, but had there been a multi-year sentence as the result of staying, I’m packing my bags! Philippines is far from an Island paradise, but it’s not like I reap a whole lot of benefits by staying here.
Even if I stayed and did the probation that I was sentenced to, no way I’d still be here now if I could leave! I’d leave, but I have nowhere to go, and no way to get there even if I did.
Between 5 and 10 years…..hmmmm. The court would have to narrow it down a bit, and it depends on whether or not he has family & economic support in the Philippines. 5 to 10 years in a Guam prison on a tropical island might be more preferable to throwing him to the fish with no money, no job, and living in destitute on the streets of an undeveloped Asian country. The danger really heats up when people find out what he did back in the USA with a 12 year old. 😮 And believe me, word gets around. If starvation doesn’t get him, the vigilantes & criminal element will. Now if were talking 25 to 90 years, he’d might consider renouncing citizenship, even if he has to live in destitute in his homeland. There’s still that small chance he’d might survive it. But again, having support, connections and a place to stay is the key. It seems like his mama still supports him, so I think she & other family members might be able to hook him up and integrate back into their society. If they do, I suggest he repent, find religion and be at mass every day to please his mama & relatives.
I like how they make it sound so easy to renounce your citizenship.
It’s a process that can only be done from outside of the US, you need to pay $2350 the even apply, you need to present a case as to why you want to renounce your citizenship, and then you could still be denied and they keep your money.
They were supposed to reduce the cost back to $450 but that doesn’t seem to have come into fruition.
